According to Wikipedia, Helen makes an effort to resemble a Bavarian alp village and the buildings have to be built in that style through a city zoning law. And either earn or van directly said they were going to Helen. So I think it was

Weird episode. I turned it off after about 5 minutes. I never really care for the Earn and his woman episodes. They seem to suck.

Earn was been a real frickboi this epsiode. Van wanted to do one thing she liked with him, he couldn’t even do that.

Guessing the next thing that gets robbed from Earn is being Paper Boi’s manager

my biggest takeaway is that zazie beetz was apparently born in germany and that she actually legit speaks german and shite. donald and the rest of the writers probably made this episode for that exact reason

Well, frick me running.

While the episode was set in Helen, pretty clearly shot in Atlanta (which makes sense because why the frick would a production crew drive up to Helen; there were a couple of shots that made me wonder if it was actually Helen but some that were definitely Atlanta). I've been to Helen a number of times throughout my life, including a full three days getting as drunk as I have ever been to the point that I still can't drive through the town without feeling the need to puke all these years later.

Needless to say, the real Helen is nowhere near as interesting or eccentric as this episode might have made it look (nor is it full of as many attractive looking people). As far as I know, there's no actual connection to German people. Rather, it's quit literally a tourist trap; IIRC they needed a way to attract tourists to the mountains so they came up with the gimmick of making all the local architecture bavarian in style and theme and started selling a bunch of overpriced stereotypical German trinkets. That being said, it's quite the oddity and can be worth wasting a day in (or three if it's the Summer and you're looking to get sloppy drunk for cheap with a big group of friends).

I'm a little disappointed in the episode given how bizarre the town really is and how much could have been done with it. The idea of Donald Glover in Helen is pretty damn entertaining.

Still, don't think too many German folks are going to trek up to Helen to celebrate. It's a gimmick mountain town akin to Gatlinburg. I think it was just a convenient hat tip from Glover to the local viewers that know what Helen is.

Helen sucks. It is almost as bad as going to Maggie Valley. A typical weekend is over run with the trashiest elements of the area within a 2 hour drive of the town. A few local artist have shops but most of the shops sell the same cheap trinkets that one finds in any low rent tourist destination. The food is average at best. However, some areas closeby are nice if you like to hike or trout fish.

It is sad because it wasn't always that way. I am 47 and went to Helen with my parents frequently as a kid and a teen. It was far more quaint and authentic feeling 35 years ago. It used to be the main village by the river that runs through the middle of town but now it has stretched out a half a mile in both directions built up with tourist traps. Think of your local Walmart clientele and that is who you will be sharing your day with in Helen.
