Aquaman Spinoff 'The Trench' in the Works

quote:
Warners has hired newbie scribes Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald to pen a horror-tinged script centered on the Trench, the deadly amphibious creatures seen attacking the hero and his love, Mera, in Aquaman.
Wan and Peter Safran will produce the project, titled The Trench, which would be much more modestly budgeted than the normal DC superhero tentpole.

That's an odd choice

Is this just going to be there version of a Blumhouse movie? Trying to get in on low budget horror movies that are a safe bet to make a profit?

Oddly, this idea isn’t very deep.

A Wan produced horror movie, featuring the Trench as the monsters, attacking a ship or island... not sure why it wouldn't work.
I'm not the first to wish that these franchises would have small spin-off movies. Rogue One and Solo were more contained, but far from small movies.
Star Trek, with its massive history and timelines is perfect for this, but the small stories never make it to the screen.

There could be a very good movie made about the Trench. But just to keep it somewhat hero related I could see Dolphin being a character in it. I've really liked the character since the Peter David comics run. She could work as a separate but additional character and point of view if they want to stay apart from the rest of the Aquaman cast as reported.

Dolphin is an interesting idea.
Could also introduce other characters from Aquaman's circle. Garth, Kaldur'ahm and Tula would be cool to see.
Maybe flesh out the 7 kingdoms some more.
I'm definitely interested in where they go with this.

Scott Mendelson had a good observation on this. It’s a play straight from Hamada and Wan’s The Conjuring playbook. Take minor but popular monsters from your successful movie and spin them off.
