So far so good, IMO. Franco is great in his two roles. Pacing is on point as you'd expect from David Simon, and lots of The Wire alumni in the show.

My wife and I are both really digging it.

For anyone who saw last night's episode, what is your take on the pimp's reaction to the waitress talking literature with the prostitute at the end of the bar?

To me he looked super fricking pissed, but I don't see why he would be.

The pimp-ho dynamic is based on mental and emotional reliance. She will only work for him if she is dependent on what he offers, safety while out working. If anyone threatens that reliance, say by forming a relationship with her or encouraging her to further herself (in that episode, by reading), it is a threat to his income. Basically, he doesn't want her thinking about anything but hooking.

Nobody would be paying to have sex with Maggie Gyllenahll.

Not much anyway. I know people like her but she is not attractive at all.

I like the show and fast forward through Gyllenhall scenes sometimes.

She’s unwatchable

Tried giving it a chance but I’m done. I don’t find any of the characters likeable and I also don’t care about what 1971 NYC. Reminds me of Treme a lot... bunch of quirky statements at the very end of the scene that only someone from that time and place would understand... cut to next scene... rinse, repeat. At least with Treme I’m from south Louisiana so there was a connection.

I agree that it's good not great so far. Also, i have a bitch of a time hearing some of the dialogue, which is really annoying.

I'm enthralled by the setting. I love the Franco/mafia storyline. But I couldn't care less about the whores.
