Inherent Vice is not supposed to be a coherent film. If you know that going in, it's a totally different experience.

It's in the vein of The Big Sleep or Harper. It's plot doesn't matter. It's supposed to be confusing. It's a "vibe" film, and a damn good one.

I would rather watch Inherent Vice 20 times again than watch The Master once.

For me, it's PTA's second best film and my personal favorite. Licorice Pizza has many of the same qualities that made Inherent Vice so good...particlulary the Sean Penn and Jon Peters segments.

But, to each his own, I guess.

Wow. That movie was horrible. Joaquin just spewing like a 70s porn star.

Lol. Inherent Vice is an amazing film. Every actor in the movie does a fantastic job with their roles. Joaquin doesn't "spew" at all. If anything, he plays Doc Sportello with as much restraint as possible for a stoned and paranoid PI. It's PTA's best film.

Man I love the Master. Powerhouse performance by PSH makes it rewatchable for me on that alone

I wasn’t as big a fan of inherit Vice as you but I do agree it’s a really good movie

Magnolia is still probably my favorite PTA, even for all its flaws. But Hard Eight is up there too, I’ve found my self going back to Hard Eight a lot.

The more I wrote this out the more I realized I either really like or absolutely love all his movies except Phantom Thread, just couldn’t get motivated to watch it (maybe I should), because I wasn’t even thinking about Boogie Nights or TWBB

Yeah if y’all liked it that’s great. I’m usually pretty liberal with enjoying movies but tried to watch it 3-4 times and couldn’t finish it.

PTA is hit and miss and this was a huge miss for us. It didn't deliver on story, performance, or even on a nostalgia level. As a young teen in the early 70's, I can tell you that this 24? 28? year old woman "dating" a 15 year old and hanging out with his elementary and junior high age friends is a pretty ridiculous fantasy. Add on to that the Forest Gump life this kid led, being featured in Yours, Mine, and Ours, getting in on the ground floor of waterbeds, bean bag chairs, and legal pinball...

And even if you look at all of that as a fantasy wink at the audience in order to tell a fun story... there's no fun story.

The bit with Sean Penn was mildly entertaining, but the Jon Peters stuff was forced, pointless, and served only to amp up the weirdness level.

The Master and Inherent Vice at least left me thinking that there were great parts to those films, but there was just nothing there in Licorice Pizza.

Also... Not sure what all of the running was about. That was just a distracting choice.

This was A BIG MISS!..and a MESS.

Editing isn't even that coherent, story is all over the place. Movie is so busy trying to be retro-cool they neglect to tell a good story. It feels like major portions of the movie were cut and those were connect the dots portions.

I wouldn't call it a BIG miss, but...

It was a more elaborate re-telling of Rushmore without the charm, humor and heartening outlook.
