It wasn’t that I could remember. Thanks for posting that about the books. I never read them, but after seeing the movie might go through the trilogy. I loved the movie.

Thanks all for the answers, I was wondering if I missed something in the film or by not having read the books. I’ll try & catch it again at some point.

It’s funny because I’ve read the books but have not seen the movie.
From what I understand by reading the threads on here, the movie seems to be the story of the first book with the knowledge you could only have from the second book.
In the first book, the characters don’t even have names.
I read this SJW hubub about Portman playing an Asian and I was like “whaaaaat?” They don’t even give her a name or mention that she’s half Asian until the second book and then only in passing. Like one time. You could easily miss it. It’s not an “issue” in the book whatsoever. She could be black or a Finnish Lapp for all the reader knows, except for that one line that most people probably read over without recognizing it.
In the books there aren’t any fantastic beasts either. There’s some kind of undefined swamp creature and the being down in the “tunnel/tower”, but not a bunch of mutants like the movie trailer showed.
Anyway, the author of the book doesn’t make a big deal out of the all female team being all female. It’s not a SJW moralizing vehicle. It just sort of happens to be that way because they’ve tried all other combinations of teams.

Portman has been in some really bad movies and the Thor movies were some of the worst MCU has put out.
She's getting close to being non cast

As the other woman said to Lena on the canoe, “we are all damaged goods”. I think the Team Leader knew that, and knew those people would accompany her with little effort.
I think she also saw that each of them was self destructing in their own way. Each character represents a different side of that theme. She was allowing them to do exactly what she was doing.

I thought it was a good plot but got boring real fast. And the ending just dragged and I quit caring.

Everybody has their own opinion i guess but it was not awful. I mean some people liked a ghost story and the witch but i thought those movies were awful. I would take this movie over those movies any day.

I really don't understand what people found so confusing about the shimmer/lighthouse. They're essentially cancer from space.

A good similar example is Arrival.
Arrival is the perfect movie to separate your dumb movie friends from your high IQ ones.
The fact that the movie is produced in the same manner as the theme is magical.

Finally got around to watching this movie. It was okay and could have had some more action to it. The hole in the lighthouse didn’t make a ton of sense, but I guess cancer doesn’t make sense.
My biggest problem was how the women acted once in the shimmer. It was like they were on a nature hike. Not securing doorways, going on the ground from the lighthouse, etc. and how come Natalie Portman made it through, but not anyone else?
I appreciated it for what it was, but it could have been better.
