I've become an aficionado at checking seating availability for local theaters. I suggest Fandango. Before we leave the house, I check to see who has decent seats available. If it's filling fast, we book over to the theater to grab our seats. If it's filling slowly, we'll leave later and I'll check the app to see how fast it's filling.
Another option is for us to go by early, buy our seats, and then go eat supper somewhere. You know that AMC starts their movies 25 Minutes after the posted showtime. Cinemark starts 20 Minutes late. After a while you get a feel for it and you can walk in while the trailers are running.

Not a bad idea to use Fandango to check seating. Regal runs at about 20 mins, too.
