I just find the differences between these two lists so interesting. Obviously the worth of the dollar has been on the decline for ages, but it still is cool to compare and contrast.

I’m sure you’re going to get a lot of “huh?” responses, so to help you and to clarify, these are domestic (U.S.) grosses. But they roughly correlate with worldwide grosses.

So its quite clear that a greater % of the population saw Gone With the Wind.
In fact they say no other movie in history was seen more % wise by Americans than GWTW.
GWTW had 7 full theatrical releases.

All those damn Marvel movies

Unless they got very granular with the historical movies, those totals are off.
A lot of those films like Star Wars and Gone With The Wind were released multiple times. I believe the last major release for Gone With The Wind was 1998 as part of a way to pay for a remaster of the film.

GWTW had a re-release in 1967..it was the year’s No. 2 highest grossing film that year.
In 1976 NBC aired it on television...Sixty-five percent of TV viewers tuned in, the most-watched program ever at that point.

Those are obviously domestic numbers

Up through the home video era, a 3-4 hour marquee movie like that is something which would be a theater experience you really couldn’t recreate at home.
Watching that on live TV must have taken 10 hours because this predated the “presented without commercials by our sponsor, X” phenomenon.

It's a shame that most of the top 10 lifetime grosses all are nonsense comic book shite.

Damn, really? Really fricking impressive when you think about it. How many pure, adult audience horror movies bring in revenue like this
Jaws is technically a horror movie, too. But you could take your kids to Jaws..really couldn't do that with the Exorcist

of this thread, maybe, as it seems a lot of you aren’t comprehending “adjusted for inflation.” Of course they’re all gonna be recent huge budget action movies with built-in audiences that will go see them multiple times.

Yeah I remember it didn't have a huge opening weekend (only like $30 million, and the budget was over $200 million) but it just kept going and going and going. Earned at least $20 million and stayed at #1 for 15 weekends in a row. I believe it was another Dicaprio movie (The Man in the Iron Mask) that toppled it but then Titanic was right back at #1 a week later.

Jaws was still PG (no PG13 existed yet).
