It wasn't perfect by any means but I actually like the story of Palpatine's political maneuvering to essentially have the "good guys" raise and join the army that he would eventually use to destroy them and take over the republic.
if you boil the prequels down to a 2 or 3 page outline then yeah, it's really interesting. The execution was awful on every level.

I agree - there were a handful of what I consider quality moments - the initial, Bond-esque action sequence with Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi Wan and the Trade Federation - a handful of scenes with Obi Wan and Annakin (I give Ewan a lot of credit for doing his best in otherwise awful films) - Annakin and killing the Sand People, plus his reaction to what he did (I felt that was Hayden's sole redeeming moment), and bits of the final fight between Obi Wan and Annakin.
The rest of it was mostly drek. Darth Maul was cool, but ultimately empty (kind of like Boba Fett) and Yoda flying was ho hum.
When one goes back to the orinigals (the "real" originals) - the prequels just didn't have the swagger - nothing like a Han Solo - nothing like real Vader - barely even flashes of it.
Wooden acting which is partially the fault of the overreliance on CGI - I mean, we all know Liam Neeson, Samuel L. Jackson, Christopher Lee, even Natalie Portman - can act. We've seen them do it in other vehicles. I mean, really act well - world-class. But not in these movies.
Incomprehensible, useless and wasted storylines. Jar-Jar is just the tip of the iceberg. No true protagonist. No flow - no real through lines even. Just toy ad after toy ad that really didn't let up until the 3rd film (which is yet another reason why it looks "good" in comparison to the first two).
It's pointless to argue about it now, but yet here we are. This speaks to the greatness of the (truly) original films, before the "special editions" and prequels cocked everything up.
