Because of that, he froze when shite hit the fan.

oh i agree, he definitely froze. but part of what made him freeze was that he wasnt at the point of friction and didnt have a good concept of what was going on. he should have been there physically with them. but you are totally right, in that he froze and ultimately someone else had to step up. he was like Lt Dike in BoB - "WHAT NOW LIEUTENANT??"

also agree with you about his arc - he was humble after his recovery and didnt try to overcompensate to recover from his shame. like you said, he let Hicks sort of run the show. personally, i think he should have assumed command but with the understanding that he learned a lesson and was leaning heavily on his experienced troops to give him sound advice. that's what a good officer does - stays in charge, but learns from his mistakes. that said, it was jsut a two hour action movie, not a PME on junior officer combat leadership.

and i absolutely love that he went out like a mothaphukkin G - in a pile of spent brass and his weapon dry

Hicks was one of the coolest supporting characters ever!

Hicks was an extremely well-written character. So much information about him is conveyed in the first half of the movie with only a handful of quick snippets and one-liners, which masterfully tee up his larger role in the second half of the movie.

"Somebody wake up Hicks."

"I like to keep this handy for close encounters."

It's obvious that this guy is a seasoned veteran who has seem some shite.

That makes his transition to the capable, confident leader feel smooth and natural and not some hokey "I'm in charge now!" BS.

Any yes, I absolutely loathe the fact that he was killed offscreen in A3. Gave me a bad taste about that movie from the get-go.

But, like any good officer, he cared about his soldiers. And his character arc comes to fruition when he goes back to help Vasquez, knowing that it was pretty much a suicide mission.
good point

Also Vasquez was a LOOSE cannon. Could’ve easily blown them all up with her going commando when the walls started moving. But then again , can anyone blame her for that reaction?

Alien 3 was such a clusterfrick it wasn’t funny.

Fight me.

Alien 3 is arguably the second best Alien movie. It’s that good IMO. Obviously I get the love for Aliens, and it’s great. But Alien 3 just hits all the right tones for me and it got back to more of a horror aspect similar to the first one. The cat and mouse scenes are just great.

I do agree that Newt and Hicks dying offscreen is egregious though. But that’s more of a setup to the movie rather than an actual happening in the movie, right?

I’ll forever die on the hill that Alien 3 is one of the most disrespected and underrated movies ever.

Theatrical cut? Or assembly cut? Because if you say the assembly cut, I agree. I love it. Even the killing of Hicks and Newt, because that was in line with the spirit of the Alien-verse. No truly happy endings. Pretty ballsy move IMO.

Alien 3 does the worst offense any movie can do. It’s fricking boring. And gay.

He's just a grunt. No offense.

None taken.

I like both. Alien 3's biggest downside was that it never made it to Earth, but that didn't bother me as a kid like it did fans of the series.

Newt and Hicks dying offscreen didn't bother me really. They were characters in the last movie, not this one. Outside of them maybe "deserving" a "better death" or whatever, I didn't really care about that back then.

i'm not crazy about the theatrical cut, but i love the assembly cut. agree with both of your points about Earth and Hicks/Newt. in fact, an Alien 3 movie on Earth with Hicks and Newt running around as sort of holdovers from the last story, even though their arcs were pretty much complete, sounds pretty shitty - "Ripley and Friends"? i'm sure a good writer could have made it work, but...meh.

the stuff on Fury 161 just works for me. it's dark, dreary, and overwhelmingly oppressive just the way i think it should be for this series. the mood is perfect for the end cap to the trilogy, in my opinion. (i pretty much disregard Alien: Resurrection and the AVP stuff).

I agree with that. It did a great job of getting back to the dark/gloomy setting that an Alien movie should be. It also got back to more of a horror vibe as well, which is what an Alien movie should be at its heart. I think that's one reason I feel about Aliens the way I do. I think Aliens is great, but it was such a shift from what made the original so awesome that it slips down a notch or so for me. It's pure action/thriller, which is fine, just not what I preferred from it back then.

And it's odd because I feel almost the opposite about Terminator 2. Same director, and same concept (first is more sci-fi horror and the second is in your face action). While both are great, I love T2 way more than the original. Go figure.

Resurrection is a good movie, but feels out of place a bit. Plus they basically neuter what makes Ripley such a great character by making her an android or clone or whatever.

I will say I absolutely loved the first AVP movie though. It is admittedly not overly great, but I liked it a lot (outside of the Mary Sue heroine).

As kid Iwas already a huge fan of the first two.I fricking hated it when I saw it Its grown on me over the years though as my appreciation for filmmaking has matured. Its beautifully shot and the score is my favorite of all the films. The hopelessness, the nihilism , the ending.... I still have mixed feeling on it. The assembly cut does improve it a good bit imo.

Respectful minds can disagree.

While it is certainly best categorized as "action," I thought Aliens, especially the first act, superbly captured the fear factor that propelled Alien to such popular reception.

Anyone sitting through their first viewing is gripping their armrests as the marines are slowly exploring the dark, deserted colony, not knowing what is around the next corner. Definitely was as heart-pounding (to me, at least) as when Dallas ventured into the ductwork in Alien. Ditto for the scene when the aliens cut the power and Ripley and co. have no clue how they are infiltrating their defenses.

BTW, Cameron's usage of the motion tracker sound effect was brilliant.
