What a terrible ending after a decent movie up till that point. Guy Pearce did well, but people watch A Christmas Carol for the redemption at the ending. That ending was terrible. There wasn't any redemption. To be honest the whole plotline with the wife was dumb.

The worst of every Christmas Carol type movie.

I watched this version last year and was not at all a fan. My favorite remains the 1984 version starring George C. Scott.

I'm wondering exactly how this went down but at some point this was being written and somebody said "Hey, you know what would really take A Christmas Carol to the next level? Scrooge being molested as a child!"

It was terrible. What’s the purpose of the story if Scrooge doesn’t redeem himself at the end? He hates Christmas because he was molested as a child and Bob Cratchit’s wife is a witch who brought about the ghostly visitations. No thanks.

A Christmas Carol 2019

The scene that drove me crazy in the show was when Mrs Cratchit shows up at Scrooges apartment "to fulfill her obligation to the transaction", and then after it is revealed that she was merely part of an "experiment", ends the scene by giving a righteous speech infused with some form of voodoo magic silliness as if suddenly she shits morality.

For better or worse, she had a choice to say no to the proposition, but she didn't and ends up taking the money anyway. Really don't get the righteous tone she takes after other than smoothing out the bad optics of a white man making an absolute fool out of a black woman in today's PC world.

All in all I thought it was an interesting interpretation, though I'm not usually a fan of mutilating a classic, particularly from a writer who I, with respect to Shakespeare, Proust, Twain and others, consider the greatest writer that Western culture has ever produced.
