Most good people are capable of raising 3 or 4 kids tops without emotional abuse (5 tops). No way you can mentally raise that many kids. It's child abuse, even if both parties are ignorant of it.
In the Godfather novel, Kay tells Michael it must have been interesting coming from such a large family. Michael thinks (but does not say out loud) that among immigrants like the Italians 4 children (even 5 counting Tom) was considered a relatively small family.

I've read about them and seen some of the shows. They are a very close very religious family. They do a lot of community work. I ran across in the last few weeks and they were collecting things to have a flea market to benefit the Arky Children's Hospital NICU or maybe it's families with children in the NICU, where their youngest child was for a long time having been born very premature at about a pound.

They seem fine to me. Just different from me and my beliefs. It works for them. Two of the girls are midwives, I believe. The oldest girl isn't "courting". It's another one who is younger. They do not arrange the marriages. They do, however, recommend that they remain chaste, extremely chaste, until marriage and the parents do monitor the relationships, but the kids don't seem to have a problem with that. I saw an interview and they believe the same things as the parents. It's not the norm, but it's not necessarily a bad thing to spend time getting to know one another without any of the physical acts. I couldn't do it.

Somehow they are debt free, live in a huge home on a large piece of property and own other properties and businesses. They've done a lot of building themselves. I think they helped build another family's home who has a bunch of children also. That part is to be admired.

They seem like nice people, to me, with different beliefs than I have. I don't know why anyone would hate them.

They didn't have the 20th child. They lost that one. I see them on the Today Show from time to time.

Why the frick do you care how many kids someone has if they are fed and clothed?

Because there's more to life than being fed and clothed.

quote:

Do you think an older child being assigned the responsibility to look after a younger child harms the older child? Really?

If your mentality is "frick looking over my 6 year old kid 24/7, let's just let 8 year old Jeff look after him, who in turn is looked after by 10 year old Lisa, etc., then yeah, there's a problem with that. Unless shite has really hit the fan, siblings should not be the primary people responsible for children.

quote:

Is catering to our kids every need until they're 18 really turning out productive members of society?

Typically yeah. The kids who aren't catered to typically turn out pretty fricked up in one way or the other. If every kid's basic emotional needs were taken care of as well as their physical, then people turn out typically pretty competent.

The Homeschool criticism may be the most laughable. As if the standards of the public school system are above reproach. Give me a break.

Yeah, but these crazy fricks don't believe in a proper education for their kids. They teach them crap like evolution is impossible (if they're even told about the concept at all), that there was a Global Flood that killed everything but left behind no evidence, and that Moses apparently reached the summit of Mount Sinai on a Velociraptor. Plus they let their college age kids go to college on something called "CollegePlus!" which I can only imagine how stellar of an education that is. Looking it up, kids as young as 14 can enroll, and it has stuff that is non-stop fundamentalist Christian schools. Just when I thought there couldn't be anything more damning on a resume than Devry or University of Phoenix, this comes along and proves it all wrong.

Let's bump this thread in 20 years and see where these kids are. I guarantee you they will be in the top tier of society.

Oh yeah, I'm so sure the people who won't let their kids have a proper education, have arranged marriages, and are supported by reality television are going to be real upstanding citizens. That CollegePlus degree is really going to get those kids places.

Seriously, those kids are going to grow up fricking nuts, and the younger ones especially who grew up with a tv camera in the house and no sense of what it means, are going to really not going to forgive their parents for what they've done. They haven't given them a chance at a normal life, and there's in the very least going to be one black sheep who completely loses it. That kid will write a book and prove how toxic of an environment it is to raise a child.

You should watch the show and read more about them. Your criticisms are unfounded.

After your post I watched two shows tonight.

Those reality shows don't pay enough to support that family. There are not all that many episodes either. They buy everything used "and save the difference". That's their motto as was explained last night when they held a flea market for Arky Children's Hospital and raised over 18 grand to help families with kids in the NICU.

I find them to be a fascinating family. I don't think the older kids "raise" the younger ones. They help with them, but they don't raise them. The mother is home since she doesn't work and it appears the father is home a lot also. Most families have two working parents and young kids are in school and/or daycare all day and don't see their parents but a few hours a day during the week. These folks are around their kids a lot more than that. Those kids get more attention than a lot of kids in small families. I don't get the criticism about not enough time for them. Seems to me there's a whole lot of closeness and love in that family. Whole family moved the oldest son and his family to DC on one episode, themselves. No movers. That's a lot of time spent together right there. They do everything together with just family or with other families.
