No, just the final

Did no one read the top of the chart? 2 / 3 of Americans won't watch the World Cup. (I'll be a part of that 1/3 that does watch it)
I don't see why some people (in either camp) can't just accept that it's extremely popular around the world but not so popular here.
As John Oliver recently put it. To most Americans soccer is just that sport that you pick up your 10 year old daughter from, but for everyone else it is a religion.
Who cares? Let people enjoy whatever sport they want to enjoy. Do you think the Indians and Pakistanis care about who else watches cricket?

No, make no mistake. It's pretty damn popular in the US. Just not in South Carolina.

Honestly, I don't really think it is.

I didn't realize 2/3 of Americans were from South Carolina.
Sure there are soccer fans in the US, but it is in the deep shadow of football and 1-2 other sports.

It is vastly more popular than the superbowl in Miami and I wouldassume other large US cities with an international presence like new york and LA.

I don't really understand how that makes it "not popular". Most people I know like basketball, football, and soccer. It's not an either/or thing.

Two biggest factors:
#1- Outside of the United States/Canada, people HATE American football. Nobody watches, nobody cares. Especially college football- on the rare occasions I meet someone outside of North America, they might know a couple NFL teams, but know ZERO about college football (which, IMHO, is better than the NFL).
#2- Outside of the United States/Canada- EVERYONE watches soccer. Every continent has interest, esp. S. America and Europe, but it is strong EVERYWHERE.
So that graphic, while impressive, does not surprise me in the least.

sad but true. mexico has come a long way but who gives a frick what they think either way.
i, for one, find people's ignorance towards the global popularity of soccer quite entertaining so i kind of hope these topics never go away

quote:- Independent UK
The myth that the World Cup final attracts a global television audience of more than a billion people has been debunked by an Independent investigation into TV viewing figures that shows that true audiences are between a quarter and a third of that size.
This prompted Fifa to admit yesterday that numbers up to now have been massively exaggerated in some cases, and simply guessed in others.
Actually hard numbers suggest...nothing above 260 million.
Most of the world isn't like the US - us and Western Europe are the anomaly...and even we are somewhat of an anomaly to part of Europe.
I've traveled a lot - most of the places where soccer is so popular are the the dirt poor places - and that's a large % of the globe where they don't have basic services and NO TELEVISION!!!!
The World Cup is basically and mostly watched by Western Europe - Brazil...pockets of South America and pockets of Asia. India and Africa aren't by and large watching the WC...be practical folks.

central america? Australlia?
I doubt "by and large," they're watching much of anything in africa...but where they are, i'd suspect it's teh world cup.
Not that it matters i don't think anyone is disputing it's the most popular single sport game/tournment in the world, and those of us who like it in america will watch it.

Good for soccer and the world. Fortunately, I live in the US and enjoy football and basketball significantly more than soccer, much like most Americans.
That being said, I will watch a little of the World Cup. Competition and hatred is fierce.

Not all of Africa is mud huts. Most people have access to a television.

I have no data on african tv viewing though, i'm just speculating.

I was agreeing with you and more responding to the guy who said basically no one in Africa watches for lack of a TV.
Posted on 6/12/14 at 11:12 am to thesoccerfanjax
my fault. Too many balls in the air today...and i'm stupid, so that gets in the way of things too.

Australlia?
Soccer is like the 4th most popular code of football in Australia behind Aussie Rules Football, Rugby League and Rugby Union.

In South Africa Rugby Union the national sport, same with New Zealand.
