Canada catcher never applied the tag on the Mexico runner (he never touched the plate either) ump called him out though

Yeah, if Mexico wins, then the US would need to win tonight and tomorrow and have a tiebreaker (some convoluted metric that factors in run differential) over Mexico and/or Italy in order to just finish second and a small chance to win the group.
If Canada wins, the US would just have to win both of their games and they would win the group.

Also, if Canada wins, the US can lose to Italy and still have a chance to advance. Not saying it will be easy, but the more chances the better.
