The XFL will make a splash on Thursday with the announcement that Bob Stoops will coach the Dallas franchise. So when will the XFL sign a player whose presence will raise eyebrows?

It could happen when the XFL offers significant (or, you know, any) pay to a college player otherwise too young to enter the NFL draft, or to sign with the AAF. Last week in Atlanta, XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck reiterated the position that the upstart league can, and presumably will, pursue players who aren’t yet eligible for the other major professional leagues.

“We certainly believe that we have the ability to sign a guy that’s been out of high school for a year or two years or has played college ball and for whatever reason — academic ineligibility or needs to make some money or is transferring — doesn’t want to sit out a year,” Luck said. “We think there’s the possibility of taking some of those guys. How many? And how do we do that? We haven’t really figured that out yet. I want to get our eight head coaches on board before we make any sort of policy decisions in that regard. But I can almost guarantee that we’ll take a deep look into a lot players who might be two years or one year out of high school.”

The first candidate could be Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who remains two years away from eligibility for the NFL draft. He could spend one more year at Clemson, and then join the XFL next February. Alternatively, he could skip the 2019 college season, play (and get paid) in the XFL for 2020 and 2021, and head straight to the draft.

Do you think we'll start seeing a lot of one and done at the college levels?

The NCAA is the biggest problem for College Football. Those morons can't get out of their own way

Seems like a lot of risk for the player in terms of development and exposure

XFL could easily fold quickly, and you burned 2 years of development and TV time to make a few thousand bucks.

And let’s not act like the big names aren’t already cashing checks from major colleges with bigger pocketbooks than the XFL

The XFL and AAF are nice experimental leagues for different rules and gameplans. I hardly believe a college prospects would choose them over the NFL.

I think you could see some of the academic casualties try that league out but there is no way you can convince me that Lawrence would leave Clemson and have to learn a brand new offense to get to the league when he could have been the first pick in the 2019 draft.

It would only make the blue bloods stronger. The XFL stealing NCAA players would crush the non traditional power schools.

It’s not whether top college prospects would chose the XFL or AAF over the NFL. It’s whether those prospects would choose those leagues over spending 3 years in college. It’s an interesting question.

No, but a breakout freshman may decide to choose the XFL or AAF over playing 2 more years in college until they become NFL draft eligible. Get paid for those 2 years and not have to worry about classes (or pretending to go to class).

Exactly. No ones saying a players choosing it over the NFL I think some contracts will go as high as 200K a year. Would some players choose that over going to school?

That is backwards logic dude

The blue bloods would have better players and be more likely to leave to the xfl

Under most coaches, sure, but Stoops is about as legitimate as they come.

the divide between the XFL and NCAA is wider than big name coaches can bridge

You'd get players from lower tier P5 teams. No one is skipping bama for the xfl.

The guys who would have been going to lesser schools would get scooped up by the blue bloods.

Sorry my dude, you aren't thinking this through. It would straight kill the G5s and the non traditional powers.

Don't think so plenty of these big name sec guys would consider cash right away over school

Cash over injuries. It'd be a social class issue

Hmm, he could play two years behind a talented O line at Clemson, or trust his future to the yet to be assembled O Line of the Orlando RageMeerkats.

Tough choice there.
