Arnie was also one of the last "barnstorming" golfers who would go around the country during the off season and between tourneys and take a paycheck to come play at a country club. He did it at Sherwood Forest Country Club in the late sixties. Literally just played 18 by himself while a couple thousand people followed him around the course for a fee. My dad was there as a kid. I can't play a round with him to this day where he doesn't bring up that round at Sherwood and how he walked the fairways 15 feet from Arnold Palmer while he shot a 70 or whatever it was. (sidenote, dad said he shot under par while barely even noticing the course, had never been there before and while running multiple convos with the gallery)
How many country clubs did he do that in around the country?
He was everyman's everyman. That's why everyone loves him.
Very few icons in golf weren't born with a silver spoon in their mouths.

walks of the green and stops in the cross walk right in front of us and waits for his caddy to catch up with him. He then digs in his bag and takes out his wallet and hands me a $20 bill and says "no way I should have three putted from there"

CSB... No really....!!

That is it though to the OP question. I think these stories are probably a dime a dozen where Palmer is concerned. Just able to appreciate the fact that he was being paid to do what we pay to do.

Arnie was, is too golf just like Tiger was, is too golf. People gravitated to Arnie just like Tiger today. Golf of TV was turning the corner on weekend telecasts and Arnie was there. Tiger on the other hand turned weekend golf telecast into a four day event. Arnies problem was that he started to make more money off the course, than on, because of marketing. Jack was the red headed step child, but a better golfer because he put in the time to practice and find a good coach. Arnie was making bank and didn't swing a club. Just like Tiger(Nike) today.
