But that doesn't answer the why. The reason is pretty simple, honestly. Cost of entry. If you are good at basketball, it's free your entire youth. Everything. Shoes, travel, participation, etc. And that exists in every city in America.
Soccer is super expensive to play. If you are super good, you only got super good because your parents paid a LOT of money getting you there. Then, you have a chance to latch onto one of the 30ish MLS academies which are spread across the country--meaning if you are from Louisiana, you would have to leave the state as a child. The majority of our best athletes self-select out of soccer at an early age because it's hard to pay for it.
In Europe, it's the complete opposite.
