Yeah, I know. Honest mistake, though. Come on rantards....knock it out of the park...I sacrifice myself upon the altar of The Rant.

I can not understand why they would go with less pads since the pads helped protect Earl Cambell from chronic injury. He is a walking testament to wearing more pads.

I also think he's a walking testament to running out of bounds.(SEE: Reggie Bush)

ETA: Actually, Earl Campbell is not a walking testament. Dude can barely stand.

Less pads today, but more technology. Lighter weight materials aid mainly in mobility. You have to understand the game today is more about athleticism and fielding the faster stronger team rather than loading someone up with armor.

Carbon Fiber=lighter/thinner pads.

Even with the technology though, a ton of receivers don't wear leg pads at all.

It also looks like some of the WR's don't even wear protective cups anymore. I guess I can understand the advancement in technology, but the lack of any padding around the knees astounds me.

OLD SCHOOL= NO PADS!

quote:

He is 37, and he is not old.

Defensive end Rickey Jackson, playing what almost surely is his last NFL season, has more sacks this season than anyone on the 49ers. Nobody is padding the stats, and nobody's padding Jackson either. In an age where flak jackets, neck collars and knee braces are almost as prolific as Nike swooshes, Rickey Anderson Jackson protects himself with a helmet, undersized shoulder pads and . . . nothing else.

Hip pads? Forget it.

Thigh pads? Nope.

Knee pads? Get real.

"I wore them when I was younger," said Jackson, "but as I got older the game changed. It used to be where everybody was trying to hurt everybody, but now it seems like nobody wants to get hurt. You don't see guys diving down on the turf with their neck at you like they used to do. People stand up now, and you don't find guys cutting as much. The game ain't down low like it used to be, so it's easier for you not to wear the pads."

57 should be in the Hall. Hell he played with a broken face and brought out the waffle face mask. Definitely a complete linebacker in all phases. Very physical at the line of scrimmage and played with a great set of LB'rs that let him do his thing.

(the statue of Sam Mills should be in NOLA by the way)

To Pads and RB's - pads definitely pro-longed Campbell's career, but it's obvious the human body shouldn't take that pounding for an extended period. Look at Tomlinson - the guy is not old, but he's played for a number of years straight on a high level. The body starts to break down though around 30 for Rb's consistently now (not late 30's anymore)...

The only thing that will stop him from the Hall of Fame is child support.

Why did you pick a picture with him wearing pads, then post him saying he doesn't wear them?
