Why doesn’t every team use the non-exclusive franchise tag?

With the Lamar news, I’m very confused.

I read the non-exclusive is cheaper than the exclusive tag ($32M for non-exclusive versus $45M for exclusive in LJ situation).

You have the right to match any contract.

If you choose not to match, you get 2 first round picks.

A lot of the time, the franchise tagged player is gone after the next year it seems like. So it isn’t like the team plans on signing them to a long term deal and doesn’t want to lose them. And it’s cheaper. If you lose them, you get more than adequate compensation. Most teams would take 2 first round picks over retaining any player they tagged.

So what don’t I understand?

It’s used fairly often but it’s a lot of money to gamble with. Only a few are worth it.

they do, but its for when all else fails kinda thing.

the star players are the only ones they use it on

i think it was cousins with redskins at the time that got franchise tagged 3 years in a row. each time it goes higher by 50% or something like that to make it cost a lot more
