What do they have on at night anyway -- Walker, Texas Ranger???
We got 5.8 million on ESPN. They could get 8 on CBS.

Because their little darlings, the Fumbling Irish, don't play at night.

CBS and the SEC have talked about moving the "normal" 2:30 start time to 4pm ... they've been experimenting with it for a couple years now (we may see Bama-LSU at 4pm this year) ... and we may see that happen in the next few years more often and become standard for the CBS game to kickoff at 4pm central time.
The main reason CBS doesn't put SEC games on primetime is because the SEC would "cannibalize" itself. The SEC has just as much to do with these contracts as CBS. The SEC does not want SEC games overlapping, that way as many teams possible can get on TV and be seen and the SEC can maximize TV dollars.
CBS, on the other hand, has stuff on Saturday night that gets high ratings anyway, so given the fact it really makes no differene to CBS in terms of ratings (SEC football versus their normal Sat night TV), they go with whatever makes the SEC happier, which is having 3 SEC games spread out over the course of the day and none overlapping.

Irish play on NBC, not CBS.

Is Chuck Norris still alive?

I would imagine that the ratings for the LSU vs Florida game last year were pretty high and topped whatever primetime sitcom or minidrama they normally had in that time slot. The fact that they came up with a primetime game and a 4pm hybrid time shows that they see potential for later games and are testing the market. So hopefully they will start moving more games to the later start times.

the sec has a contract with espn and cbs, why would they want to put their games up against each other?

It's good the way it is.
If they swapped and CBS got the primetime game, and ESPN/ABC got the afternoon game, you know what ESPN/ABC would do to it. Nobody outside the Deep South would get the 2:30 SEC game, because they'd be too busy getting "regional" coverage of Michigan, USC, and Notre Dame road games.

I never have understood this. Most SEC games are played at night, so I do see the point made that the SEC will overlap. But, ABC is doing it already, you think CBS would follow suit. Thus, instead of having Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman or Walker Texas Ranger on, they could have their network piped into bars, clubs, etc., instead of the obligatory ESPN. I don't recall seeing Dr. Quinn on in any bar. (Also, Yes, I realize that that show has been cancelled, but I don't have a clue what they televise on Saturday Night. It used to be Hee Haw where I lived, but oh, well).
Also, I've never been a fan of CBS's announcing Vern and Gary made me want to throw up last year, with Vern's "Louisiana State", and Gary's "[insert LSU's opponent's name here] is playing much better than LSU". Even the commercials were driving me insane. A simple little football game lasting longer than the Olympic Opening Ceremony. Wow! Go figure!

LSU-Florida did win the night for CBS, which is probably why LSU-UF is on their schedule as primetime this year:

cbs doesn't want to compete with the abc/espn primetime game. sec games are better, but the nation is sucker for usc or michigan.

Hmmm. Night game against Florida in Gainesville. Well, the last two times we've played Florida at night there, the Tigers won.

The LSU-Florida game handily beat the ABC primetime game last year.
