It gives the casual fan more rooting interest in an event they would generally have no interest in.

The Billion dollar bracket promotion was fun as hell. Wish they'd do it again, even though you essentially have no shot to ever win it. Fun to dream.

Regardless of how you do it, the fun is in making predictions and seeing how close your get. There is an added dimension with not only predicting the winner of the game, but who’ll actually be playing in the game.
It’s really not that difficult, but I have a feeling you know this already and are just trying to pimp your survivor league.
