Kelly left for LSU because he didn't think that he could get over the hump at Notre Dame due to talent differential. What he failed to recognize, however, was that NIL was about to become pay for play and Notre Dame has FAR MORE wealthy boosters than LSU does.

NIL completely changed the game, as well as the Portal, which happened to coincide with Kelly leaving. I understand him wanting to leave ND for LSU considering the success of both programs, with ND not winning a championship since 1988 and LSU winning 3 in 20 years.
ND isn't guaranteed in the playoff if this is last year due to the loss to NIU, but with the expansion to 12 they got in and played an IU team with no top 25 wins and UGA without their QB to make the Kiddie Diddler Semifinal with a chance to play for the Championship.
Freeman has proven to be a good coach so far, just as Kelly has proven over 20 years.
