Up until that point it was the only time a #1 team played #2 three times in the same season (at Texas, vs Michigan and Florida).

You realize how many close calls They had in 2002??? Yes they played lights out in the BCS game but they were far from dominate.

Every team has flaws. Missing Clarrett for several games lead to some of those close calls. Say what you want about his character but he was an extremely good college running back and they were a different team with him healthy.

Still, they gutted out win after win without him.

And Troy Smith played great against the first two, which led to him winning the Heisman.

Texas: 17 for 26. 269 yards. 2 TDs and 0 Int. Rating: 177.7

Michigan: 29 for 41. 316 yards. 4 TDs and 1 Int. Rating: 162.8

He also had a few very good defining plays that really helped him. I remember a specific one where he got hit but still rolled out of the pocket, probably running about 30 yards in total while evading tacklers left and right, and heaving the ball 40 yards into the endzone. If I remember correctly it was a very tight Penn State game. He was the best player on the best team at the time, and voters can not take a Heisman back retroactively after a terrible performance in a National Championship game.

Any answer besides Mark Ingram is obviously a joke.

Meh, I'd say Troy or Jason were worse. Troy especially.

The BCS champion teams that haven't gone undefeated in the BCS era.

'12 Bama
'11 Bama
'08 Florida
'07 LSU
'06 Florida
'03 LSU

Shows the power of perception and agenda and the politics of a popularity contest of the BCS that most recent of Bama's "titles" in the BCS era of teams that lost and of course, one didn't even win their own division - let alone conference...and only Auburn in the last couple of years was undefeated.

College football has felt like it's been down since 2006.

No great super teams after 2006.

The worst "BCS champ" should probably come from the list above.

I mean, you did list 6 teams. Out of 10 years. So yeah, odds are it "should"

Let me offer another theory. Perhaps parity is becoming more of a reality in college football? With the advent of a playoff, you are going to see it become more possible for a 1 or 2-loss team to win the national championship.

Is that the criteria for you to say college football as a whole is down?

Eyeball test. Bama fan would agree.

And it just looks and feels like it.

Doesn't anyone else feel this way?

Some of those previous champs were stacked. Just stacked and blew teams out - great on both sides of the ball.

Now it's usually a dynamic offense and piss poor defense.

Or a stout D and a crappy slow elephant crawl of an offense that kicks field goals.

I truly don't know. I lean the opposite direction. Relative to the NFL, I've enjoyed the college game more and more in recent years.

That's great. I agree that it's fun to watch these stacked teams, but it's fun for the 1 or 2 games a year when they're truly challenged, not when they are blowing everybody else out (unless you have a vested interest in said team).

But I feel like Oregon fans have said they have their best defense in history every year for the last 3 years running (and it may actually be true this year! )
On the other side of the coin, LSU played a masterful game on defense this week while putting the training wheels on the offense (which we know is dynamic). Basically, I compare that to the last 2 Alabama championships. They have plenty of offensive talent, but gameplan around their defense. The offense never really has to show how dynamic they can be to get the job done.

I don't know, I think you might have a point, but I just have a different take on it.
