Ruth was 6'2" 210 not even close to fat by today's standards. However, many of those he played with and against were much smaller. In fact Ruth would be considered small for today's game when you think Bryce Harper is 6'3" 230...

Fatness is percieved, the fact many of these players in both sports can do things that us talking on this board cannot do. They may not have idea physique but they are highly skilled and athletic enough to turn it into a career.
