Coach K
Wooden
Knight
Rupp
and Pitino is fairly underrated-- toss up with him, Tark, and Iba for #5.

And in the context of the question, is utterly irrelevant.

Yes, Rupp was a walking pile of human excrement.

He did, however, win 876 games, 4 NCs, and appear in 6 Final Fours-- back when seasons were so short, that 9 of his 41 years saw his team play 21 games or less.

That's pretty darn remarkable. His .821 winning clip is head and shoulders above anyone else with over 500 or so games as a HC.

Human excrement? Sure. Great coach? Also a check mark.

Which is why he isn't given the same respect as the other greats.

Which is why 'Who are your top 5 respected basketball coaches' is an entirely different question, unrelated to this one.

Carolina used the Four Corners as an offense, too, not just to get teams out of a zone. When they ran it, there were many, many backdoor cuts and baskets.

Sorry but whoever doesn't have John Wooden as a clear #1 is a complete idiot. Nobody in mens college basketball has even come close to accomplishing what wooden did at UCLA.

Some stupid fricking people here...are we really gonna have people in here go liberal and criticize a coach because he was racist? Was it fair to try to give Rupp shite by telling him everything he knew as a child was wrong? That's just the way things were...

Wooden has to be number 1. Everyone else is vying for second.

Coach K has one hell of an argument for 2nd best ever. He has five national titles. Sure, he has been upset early a few times but that is bound to happen when you're in the tournament every year and you're everyone's Super Bowl. He has several more years when Duke was on the verge of a National Title but didn't win for whatever reason.

I absolutely have him in the top two all time. You do not see many coaches completely change their style like Coach K did, especially in their latter years.

Also agree with everyone itt pointing out how overrated Dean Smith is/was

Nobody else in men's college basketball had Sam Gilbert either.

That's what the thread is about, but someone asked why Rupp wasn't getting more mention. That's the question I was trying to answer.

I forgot that this site has the most irrational hate for Roy Williams.

Regardless, he's got a solid resume.

In all fairness, there are plenty of rational reasons to hate Roy Williams.
