No.

I'm wondering why when Dean Smith retired...so many ESPN and pundits were clamoring all over him like he was the GOAT.

I don't get the fascination. North Carolina is a brand name...I guess he made that with ACC titles. Not really Nattys.

He created boring arse basketball that the NCAA had to institute a shot-clock.

UCLA had a fast break - BEFORE the shot clock.

I honestly don't understand why someone who was intent on bastardizing the sport - and it didn't even work out for him in terms of winning Nattys is some god.

Was he a really good coach? Sure.

Some god that people like you worship? I don't think so.

Can you imagine if Coach K won a national title in 2000 - his first ever after taking over Duke in 1980 - then coached until 2016 and finally won another one? And then retired?

And everyone said he was the best ever?

Dumbass when he won the NIT it was big tournament the NCAA hadn't expanded to 64 it was just at 48 and still played on campuses.

To win a national Juco championship is a big deal also. I know you think you're a sports sensei but you're wrong on this one.

It's unique that when Dean Smith died - most of the articles were "a greater man than coach." That's fine. I don't know.

But everyone was talking about his humanity and not coaching. I think there was some confluence of he's really a great guy and was great for civil rights...lets mythologize him coaching-wise too.

There's a difference between man and what you do on the court just in the game - just as there is a difference what you do for the game.

I've read that Smith did a lot for the game...But Smith also had regressive basketball tactics and philosophy in not growing the game. But he was also successful...more so later in his life...when I think he let players take over and be themselves and he stopped micro-managing every possession. He finally let his players play and they won a title when he was 50 years old.

As for his nemesis and pupil/friend of Knight and argument for GOAT in his own right...Coach K.

"You can have a pretty good argument about who is the second-greatest college coach of all time. There's absolutely no argument about who is the greatest." - Mike Krzyzewski

(Talking about Wooden, of course)

Hey quick question...

You're old...

How were those 16-12 UNC games in the 1960's/1970's?

If that's your thing...but I don't see the appeal. Other famous coaches have voiced my same opinion.

There's Top 15-Top10 and then there's the real Top 5.

Coach K has one hell of an argument for 2nd best ever. He has five national titles. Sure, he has been upset early a few times but that is bound to happen when you're in the tournament every year and you're everyone's Super Bowl. He has several more years when Duke was on the verge of a National Title but didn't win for whatever reason.

Underrated because he retired young, and, like Madden, his TV career overshadowed his coaching career, but the record is there.

Not much mention of Adolph Rupp. That's probably because he died before most people that post on this site were born.

Possibly because some of his players shaved points, he was a notorious racist, and his most memorable title game was a loss to Texas Western.

You could argue Frank McQuire was the better coach than Al Maquire.
