I guess you're right. Too many guys with the numbers (and accolades) ahead of him. But his senior year was one of the most memorable I can remember watching. He's in good company regardless.

He absolutely was a role player for 3 years. Just because he finished top 3 in scoring and started games doesn't exempt him for being a role player.

He was pretty one dimensional up until his Sr. year. He was never the focal point of the team until then, and even that can be argued.

pro success in general should have no bearing on how good a player was while he was at Duke.

Was mainly talking draft position, not really how they played in the NBA

I think draft position is a nice gauge on overall talent & body of work as a collegiate player.

Ok then. If Scheyer was a role player, then everyone on those teams from 2006-2009 was a role player, except for Gerald Henderson and maybe Singler in 2009 There was no unequivocal 'best' player on any of those teams except Henderson in his Junior (and last) season and maybe Singler in 2009 (although he split offensive duties with Smith and Scheyer).

I would say that is pretty accurate. McRoberts wasn't really a role player, and I wouldn't consider Singler one either. No one else really stood out. Maybe Nolan smith

Those teams really weren't star studded. But a lot of the top players were more versatile than Scheyer was

And a lot of the teams success in March/April of his senior year can be attributed to Brian Zoubek finally stepping up and playing to his abilities.

yea he was somewhere in between. Too much talent to be a role player, not good enough to be a star.

Definitely the most talented player on that 2009 team. Honestly, Singler could have been the go to guy had they run the offense through him like they did with Redick, but I'm glad they didn't. There's no doubt that in terms of talent, Singler and Smith > Scheyer, but I think all three were equally important to that team. That was one cohesive unit.

I would say Scheyer was the mvp of the championship team. I just think he played more of a sharp shooting role up to that point. Was a good player, but more of a secondary focus offensively

Laettner
Grant Hill
Jay Williams
Dawkins
Heyman
Battier
Ferry
Groat
Hurley
Redick
Scheyer

IMO. Scheyer was incredible his senior year, no way they win a championship without him.

I'm not sure where I would place Scheyer all time, however, I would definitely put him behind Jay Williams.

Down by 10 Maryland with 54 seconds left and Jay Williams takes over.

Crazy if u don't think they may retire his number. I think they do. But it's 50/50. Not a definite they don't.

Never had a chance. Not like he wasn't good enough. He got a call from 20 teams. Picked one and got hurt.

Yeah, his resume doesnt deserve to be next to those all time greats.

Steve Vacendak, Elton Brand, Chris Carrawell, and Nolan Smith have all won the ACC Player of the Year, and they dont have their numbers retired.

Brand should have his number retired since he has won a National Player of the Year award, but he hasnt graduated from Duke, so he is an omission.

I never saw the guys that played before Laettener, so I dont know quite how good they were, but my list would look something like this.

First Tier
1.Christian Laettner
2.Shane Battier
Johnny Dawkins
Danny Ferry
Jason Williams
JJ Redick
Grant Hill

Second Tier
Dick Groat
Mike Gminski
Art Heyman
Jeff Mullins
Gene Banks
Bob Fleisher
Randy Denton
Bob Verga
Bobby Hurley
Elton Brand
Sheldon Williams

Third Tier
Jim Spanarkel
Tate Armstrong
Carlos Boozer
Kyle Singler
Jon Scheyer
Mark Alare

So he is somewhere between 19-24. Ill give Scheyer the benefit of the doubt over Smith, Carrawell, and Langdon since he was productive over four years, and he won a title, and Langdon didnt, but without the title, his career would look just like Langdon's.

Let's give it a shot.
Random order
Laetner
Brand
Hill
Hurley
JJ
Wojo
J Williams
Battier
Then I think you start getting into 1 and done vs Sheyer vs Langdon territory
