What’s it like being a college football scout?

Say for a smaller university. I’ve made a thread before about being an nfl scout but curious on the college level. Theres a 16 week scouting academy you can do online. I live in Shreveport but have ties to La Tech and ULM. Curious about difficulties in getting a start doing that, pay, lifestyle. I’m in my early 50s, am I too old to where age would be a disqualification? Would it be less travel than an nfl scout if say I got on at La Tech? I wouldn’t want to be a recruiter as I’m not charismatic enough, just a scout.

What do you know about ankle flexion?

For college? You’d probably have a better shot working for a recruiting service than a university.

Schools like that probably don’t have many people in the scouting department and pay would be very low while competition is very high. There are guys just starting out that will do it for free to get their foot in the door.
Way back when I was trying to get a GA job and had connects also. Got passed over at several places because they already had their guy before job was posted. I’m sure the scouting department is similar.
I would not suggest it unless you’re financially secure or retired and just bored. I’d be skeptical of the online certification too…at that level, the coaches do a lot of the scouting and recruiting. They go to games on their bye weeks and when they’re playing at home.

I wouldn’t say I’m bored but I am retired. I still enjoy my life but football has always been a passion and maybe kind of a shoot my load and give it a chance scenario was my way of thinking. It may very well not be worth it. I wanted to be a coach or scout as a kid but went to the fire service instead.

If you have any interest in coaching and don’t care about pay, I’d just reach out to Centenary and see if you can learn from Hal Mumme. I think Mike Leach’s son coaches there too.

I appreciate the advice.
