ANYTHING over 60meters and my money is on bolt. Even Micheal Johnson in his prime. The DUDE is a machine.
Well yeah, he beat MJ's records.
I still cannot believe Bolt broke Johnson's 200 M record. I thought Michael Johnson was going to the grave with that record in tact.

At the NFL Combine in 1996, 97, 98, 2001 and 2003 and 2006 no one ran a 4.2. No one. Not one person. In 2001 Ladainian Tomlinson ran one 4.36, five in the 4.4's and vertical jumped 40.5. 2003 was a fast year, yet still produced no 4.2's. Ten athletes ran 4.3's in 2003. The heaviest was a 223 pound running back. The Combine track is always said to be slow but the truth is it is simply accurate. All of these supposed fast times seem to be run at times when no independent verification is available. Seems a bit curious doesn't it.
Here's another angle on the whole "speed" thing. Ben Johnson and Carl Lewis ran split times of 4.67 for 40 meters ( Bryan, Rose-Hulman) The split times are below.
1.84 10 yd
2.86 20 (1.02 split)
3.8 30 (.94 split)
4.67 40 (.87 split)
40 meters is 43.74 yards. This would make the distance approximately ten percent further. This means we could reduce the time by approximately .36 seconds to account for the additional 3.7 yards. This would mean that in constant acceleration mode the best sprinters in the history of the world, using blocks, ran 4.31 for 40 yards. Does it seem plausible that high school football players can run faster times without blocks.
The table below shows some of the athletes who ran below 4.4 at the NFL Combine. Obviously the athletes are getting faster but, we still don't see the dreaded 4.2's we hear so much about. In 2005 I believe one athlete actually ran a 4.2 although I did not have those stats available. One athlete in a decade.

Its wild that we all thought Carl Lewis was a freak of nature, But MJ and Bolt would smoke his arse, IN HIS prime.

Dude, Bolt is a different animal. The guy broke his own world record of 9.72 in the 100 by .03 (Beijing with possibly letting up at the end) and then went .11 faster in Berlin. Those are massive, massive improvements in the world record. The drop from 9.69 to 9.58 is staggering.

quote:peej i like you but try again dude. runners who have made it pro in track have focused on nothing but running for years. football players have to focus on a number of things for their sport. add to that the fact that bolt is a freak of nature and he would kill that. (if it was hand timed like bo's of course)
NO.

Carl still is a freak, man. They are all incredible. I lived in Atlanta 1996 for MJ's dominance, but I was sadly too young to remember this.
Part of the reason for the slight improvements in times is better technology for the tracks, spikes, training, etc. However, Bolt is out of this world.

I believe it is somewhere in the .1 to .25 range. The only fair to answer would be stick Bolt in the combine and have him run a 40.

take the p&g glasses off man. i agree with you that there's no way theyd run a 4 flat but bolt would make trindon look stupid in a 40.

I know YOU are young and are a runner. I ran track in High School. WAY before your time. BUT BO was SPECIAL. But Bolt would blow him away in anything over a 60 meter dash. In a 40?? Not SURE.

Given that fact you've seen both in their prime ill trust you here.

There is a difference in QUICK speed and track speed. You should know this.

.24 is generally the conversion added to hand time to "make it count".
I think the gun is right around there as well, but I thought it may have been less. That is the most overlooked difference between a 100 M dash and a 40 at the combine - the timing methods.

Again, I was just using Trindon as an example. But Trindon running a 4.3 and Bolt running a 4.21 would not be making Trindon look stupid. That is my point. These guys would have times close to the fastest football players to do it, because the distance is too short. Yes, they have start at the sound of a gun, they also are running out of blocks. Bolt is the fastest man in history and I doubt he could go to the combine run a sub 4.2 and 4 flat is ridiculous.

The fastest football player in the nfl would be able to keep be able to keep up with Bolt because as someone already stated the distance is to short.

The fastest allowable reaction time in track is .10 seconds. Anything faster than that is a false start. The best sprinters in the world have a reaction time between .12-.16 seconds.

4 flat is rediculous but I think they could definitely get under 4.2
