re: What makes Syracuses's zone so effective?

Syracuse is so active and long that it makes it tough for anyone to get anything going. And nobody in College basketball can shoot anymore so they are very successful. I'm sure you'll see more teams go to it in the future.

Could not have said it better
Length and athleticism are also important, the Indiana game was a prime example, Cuse' athleticism was the difference. Even with their 2-3 the players still have to know man-t0-man principles. One thing the average fan does not see is that it is not just a 2-3 regular high-school 2-3 zone, it is a 2-3 matchup zone so it is more man-to-man than you think. Basically it makes the helpside defenders flood the ballside but the reason Syracuse is so effective is that there length and athleticism allows them to get back and closeout on skips and ball movement.

Most people utilize the zone to attack the middle and make people shoot from long range. Boeheim defends the 3 with his zone to the best of their ability. Their length (which has been mentioned before in this thread) helps them keep the advantage inside while still defending outside.
They also are good at rebounding in the zone. This is much harder to do than man to man. They use a zone rebounding scheme instead of boxing out an individual.

Is that you, Bobby Knight?

I remember that game. Daniels created the biggest matchup problem SU had during its title run. They had no answer for him.

that attitude is common, and helps Syracuse as well. Listen to the former players in the CBS studio talk about the zone. They haaaaaaate it. It's not "manly" basketball. Man to man allows players to attack and turns the game into a series of, well, man-to-man battles. sure, there's help and all that, but it's a style that appeals to how many athletes think of themselves.
Zone, in theory, avoids challenging you directly. It comes at you sideways (though I dare you to call Syracuse, "soft"). If you struggle early, it becomes even more frustrating because your opponent is not engaging you like a man. They aren't beating you the right way, and it becomes more frustrating, as teams try to force Cuse to match up one and one even more, which just plays into Cuse's hands. Now they don't even need to rotate.
I love the zone. It swallows your soul.

Syracuses zone reminds me of the amoeba (1-1-3) that UNLV ran with Augmon Johnson Scurry Butler and crew.
They all have long arms and can matchup with multiple guys. When they had smaller guys like McNamara it wasn't as difficult to penetrate. Plus people seem to forget to screen the top of it.

i said the comment slightly in jest but i really do hate zone defense. to the guy with the bobby knight comment, reading season on the brink certainly helps someone hate the zone.
zone has always felt like something worse teams run to win games. obviously that's not the case with cuse or high level basketball, but ive played pick up games against douche bags trying to run zones and have loved torching them because those idiots have no clue how to run one.
and yes, it is extremely frustrating. i like some variations of a zone and especially with certain match ups and situations. but i fricking hate that an elite basketball team runs a 2-3 zone basically all the time.
