Try to get the shaft to vertical at impact. Don't do the ball way back hands forward chip

You have to allow your body to rotate and control your pitching and chipping with the pivot, not with the arms and hands

There are two theories. Most of us were taught weight on left side hands in front. This creates a positive shaft lean at impact. This is fine if you want to hit lower running shots. This also make the leading edge the first thing that contacts the ground because the leading edge is at or below the bounce. If you make perfect ball contact that is ok, but how scared are you when you have a tight lie that you are going to chunk it?.

The other theory is to use the bounce that was built in to the club. The stance is more 50/50 and the hands are generally even with the ball. The club head generally stays outside of the hands on the backswing and once impact is reached there should be neutral shaft lean. This allows the bounce to work for you. If you catch it clean then great. If you hit it fat the bounce allows the club to slide along the turf as opposed to dig and you get an acceptable shot as opposed to a chunk. On the follow through the club face is staring you down. Meaning there is no rolling of the wrist.

I will stop here as I am sure questions will arise. I will say this too, Monte Scheinblum has a short video you can download for $20 that teaches this and more. I love that video.

ETA: my teacher and I would go play 9 holes late in the afternoon and he wouldn't let me use a putter. He made me use my 58 to chip it on the green and get it in the hole. No blading allowed. He wanted to teach me to uses the bounce.

Yes, and in his prime he had the athletic capacity of an Olympic athlete as far as testing went.

Got it. I was pretty sure I chipped the second way. Now I'm almost positive.

He was on the simulator this morning with Holly and them and took 3 swings. One went left, one right, the third left.

They all laughed, but it was tough to watch. He said his body is basically falling apart.

I saw that.

1. Snap hook 9 iron
2. Block 9 iron
3. Thin shot that creeped on the fringe.

In his time we was incredible. One of the best course managers of all time.
