Was the Fail Mary that bad of a call?

Saw an article today where the ref that made the call has had a miserable couple of years LINK.
But after watching the play, was it really that bad of a call or is he just the scapegoat for the use of replacement refs.

The missed PI was pretty bad. But I've seen much worse calls than the TD/interception. Watching it at full speed there could definitely be reason to think they both had possession at the same time.

Worst call in NFL history. That's even ignoring the blatant offensive pass interference. Simply the ruling on a Seattle catch on that play was bad enough to be the worst call of all time.

He needs to talk to Jim Joyce. It seems he's been able to overcome his call and it was way worse than the call this guy made as a high school referee placed into the NFL.

If only we had some sort of system that allowed coaches to challenge plays and the officials to see a slow motion and zoomed in look of the play in a booth

Exactly. If anyone should be blasted it should be the review booth. Unless he was the one that also reviewed it but I don't think that's the case. And I'm talking about the initial call. Not after having the chance to replay it in slow motion.

One of my favorite NFL writers wrote an article about the play that could potentially change people's minds LINK
quote:
The ending has hit mainstream news outside of the realm of sports, and many sources – most of which are not even qualified to make the statement – refer to it as the “worst call in NFL history.” That might be true if your knowledge of NFL history starts in 2012.
Enough already. The biggest travesty in the NFL this week comes from all the fans and media that have let a perfect storm of events shape the biggest overreaction ever to a call that was right, and a touchdown that was legitimate.
When you take your emotions out of it, and only study the facts, then there is no denying the replacement referees got the ending right, and the NFL’s statement was correct in upholding the call.
quote:
The short version: Golden Tate had the first control of the ball, catching it with his left hand, which never loses control of the ball throughout the entire process of the play. His two feet hit the ground to establish possession before M.D. Jennings establishes possession. Tate’s butt hits the ground, and at this point, he still has control, possession and is in the end zone for a good touchdown. Tate pushed off for an uncalled offensive pass interference that would have ended the game, but this is irrelevant when history shows no referee in football will make such a call on a Hail Mary. Seattle’s win is legit.
I don't really have a strong opinion either way. I just think it's entertaining how worked up people got over it.

Jennings had the ball in both hands and Tate had its hand in there as well and pinned it against Jennings hands and the ball. Jennings had the int
Wasn't Jimmy Graham called for it this year?

The only people with an emotional investment in that call would be packers fans, fantasy owners, and gamblers. So what about the rest of us that know it was the wrong call?

Calvin Johnson and dez Bryant would like a word with you regarding the process of the catch.

This 100%. I hate when replay guys look for excuses to not get the call right. I believe there was some excuse that they couldn't overturn a simultaneous catch call, or something like that.
Just get the call right.

The play, explained in detail why it was a correct call, and still some people fail to accept it. Ironic that this poster goes by the name "Open Your Eyes." It's irrelevant what Calvin Johnson or Dez Bryant would have to say regarding the process of the catch. The only authority on the process of the catch is the NFL rule book.

"Simultaneous possession" isn't reviewable.

The biggest problem wasn't the call in my opinion as a former football official but the lack of communication between the officiating crew.
Anytime there is a play like that you look to the other official and give him/her a signal to show what your call is (can be a thumbs up), if you aren't on the same page you get together, talk about what you each saw and call over the head referee. Then, after discussion you make the ruling on the field.
Problem with them is that both made conflicting signals, which should never happen.
Looking at it though it is far from the worse call in NFL history as some try to claim.
Difference between the two is that Jim Joyce was a very respected veteran official while this guy was someone just trying to break in. For all intents and purposes that game significantly hurt his chances of breaking in the pro ranks (which isn't easy to do).
Jim Joyce went back to officiating in MLB including calling in the World Series. This guy will only be known for that call. Also, Armando Galarraga has made amends with Joyce and has appeared with him since the incident.

I'll give them a pass on the PI. They never call that in those situations but the rest was horrible
