Virginia player swatted the rebound and Virginia player collected it in the back court... Does there have to be possession off the rebound prior to the ball going backcourt?

It hit the rim, but after that, Virginia player swatted the ball into the back court, where it was collected by another Virginia player.

That's what I was wondering...if you had to have possession after the free throw. That would explain it....

Yes, a team needs possession for it to be a back-court violation. Swatting the ball does not count as possession.

No team control on a shot, ball gets batted into backcourt on the rebound and offensive team can legally gain team control with possession
