Wrong. Parish graduated from HS in 72, Bird in 74. Parish was in the first class that the NCAA allowed freshmen to play varsity. That was the 72-73 season.
Not only did Bird play against Parish at Centenary but so did Cedric Cornbread Maxwell from UNC - Charlotte. He was really great. I saw all of those games at CC. And all 3 ended up on the Celtics.

This really doesn't get mentioned enough...we all talk about Bird vs. Magic...but not really Bird taking a Missouri Valley Conference school to an undefeated season (so you say, who'd they play) - well, then to the National Championship game against the "tough" competition. This was before rinky-dink sports schools did anything in the tournament.
The Sycamores had never even been invited to the NCAA tournament before Bird...he arrives on campus and they get a #1 seed.
...and they've only made the tournament 3 times since - recently with tourney expansion.

One of the most COMPLETE players to EVER play the game. The "HICK from French Lick" was a lot smarter and better than people gave him credit for.

You had to play man back then. Bird would avg 10pts/4rbs/ 3ast more a game against a zone. I would probably have 2-3 more fights too.

Bird signed with Indiana in 74, transferred to Indiana St is 75 and had to sit out a year. FIrst season to play for Indiana St was in '76-77. Indiana St. did play Centenary in 76-77, but Parish was already playing in the NBA that year for Golden State. Once again, they played in your imagination.

I saw the game. There is a guy who could verify. Hawthorne, voice of LSU, was a CC radio announcer at court side in those days. Bob Griffin of KSLA TV was also at the game. He's still alive.

Bird was clutch, completely turned around a historic franchise, and had a great run. But, he only played at a high level for 8-9 years. I love Bird, but I think that he is historically overrated. Sure, he won 3 titles and would have had 2 more if not for Magic and the Lakers, but Larry Legend has blown up over time, I think.

No you didn't. According to Bird's own web site, he did not play for Indiana St until the '76-'77 season. According to both the history at the Indiana St athletic web site and Centenary athletic web site, Centenary and Indiana St played in the '74-'75 season when Parish was at Centenary but Bird was not at Indiana St,, did not play in '75-'76, then played in '76-'77 after Parish had left Centenary.

The game didn't happen. As had been pointed out, Bird didn't play his first game for ISU until the 76-77 season and Parish played his last game for the Gents in the 75-76 season.

I was wrong. Bird was great in every respect. I believed that at the time and to my shame, bought into the argument over the years that more recent players were better and he was a product of marketing more than being great. Watching the highlights, reading the arguments in this thread, and taking some time to remember reaffirms what I used to think.
Amazing how the media narrative over time can skew your thinking. I never doubted that he was great as I saw it with my own two eyes, but I somehow bought into the idea that he was a bit overrated.

Yep, he was a great basketball player. By the time he was in the NBA he was already 23 years old. Kobe had already played six NBA seasons by the time he was 23. Bird's playing style also wouldn't lend itself to a long career and the fact he built his mother's driveway for her over an offseason also hurt his back.
During his peak, he was just playing with people cause he would get bored. Below is a link to the left handed game where he scored 22 points with his left hand on purpose.

People seem to hate Brent Mussberger on here (don't really know why - I guess because he calls Pac games...:sigh:) but he had one of the greatest lines ever in sports about Bird after he won the batttle against Wilkens in Game 7 of Eastern Conference semi-finals.
