No surprise

David Padgett, who served as Louisville's interim coach after Rick Pitino was fired, will not be retained as head coach.

ESPN

Xavier head coach Chris Mack will be the frontrunner.

Louisville can't get out of it's own way. Took over that huge mess and led them to 22 wins.

14 losses and a NIT. Of course you would want him to stay

Let's be honest here ( a stretch for you I know since you still think they have the banner and trophy), but he took over a tremendous mess, maybe the worst in college basketball ever, and he got the team to play hard all season long, and went 22-14.

They barely missed out on the NCAA's. Yeah, the game against MSU was bad, but he did a remarkable job given the circumstances.

Is that not fair?

Decent job? Yes. Remarkable? Hardly. Take off your blue goggles for a minute and comprehend

I am genuinely surprised that this thread wasn't started by a UK fan

Well it didn't take them long to swoop in. It's like clockwork.

Felt like this poor guy was a contractor simply paid to do a job for a season. I know he is an alum and probaby wanted it to work out, but anything short of a first round tourney win was going to have him shown the door.

No dog in this fight, but it's pathetic to act like that championship didn't happen. This goes for any title in any sport that is retroactively vacated. I hate most of the programs that have had many wins or national titles vacated (like USC), but I still recognize them because they fricking happened.

Why would Chris Mack even consider this job?

That's usually what an interim coach does. Not every AD is stupid as Alleva.

It’s odd that the fans around here (Louisville) think the move is a no brainer considering he’s an Xavier grad from Cleveland.

Eh, there's enough talent on that team that they would have been a middle-tier seed under normal circumstances. I think Padgett has a good basketball mind (some of the stuff he did this year was awesome and stuff Pitino wouldn't or couldn't do as far as drawing up plays, switching D, etc.), but he clearly has a long way to go when it comes to player development, running an organization, developing program culture, etc.

For the record, I think firing Padgett is stupid and should stick with him until the FBI hog gets all the way through the snake unless they have someone like Mack already lined up and ready to sign.

Louisville is going to be hammered by sanctions for several years. Mack has a very good team and has made 5 straight tournaments with the school he graduated from and spent the majority of his adult life at.

The problem is Louisville fans in the past who said the same thing about Cal's Final 4 appearances with UMass and Memphis. "He cheated, never happened!"

I agree. Vacated wins and titles are lame

Agreed to an extent, but UL can make him an offer that would make him and his family generationally wealthy. Xavier cannot.

UL has virtually of all the serious corporate backing and big money donors in their pocket in a metro of about 1.3MM. Xavier is like sixth in the pecking order (behind the Bengals, Reds, OSU, UC, and perhaps even UK) in a metro of about 2.1MM.

His current salary isn't that much ($1.7MM per) for a guy of his caliber, though, to be fair, you should always take reported private school salaries with a grain of salt.

Louisville could triple his salary and double the length of his current contract and not blink an eye. Xavier just can't even come close to anything like that - they might be nearly maxed out as it is.

If I were at a job I truly loved, was doing very well, and was getting paid well enough that I never had to worry about money ever again, I would still have to seriously consider an offer that would not only make sure that I never worry about money ever again, but that my grandchildren and great-grandchildren never worry about money ever again.
