The early and aggressive recruiting strategy being employed by Coach Toledo and his staff is paying dividends.
Early offers, ongoing contact, etc. have afforded his staff the ability to secure commits from many players w/ upside, like QB Michael Strauss, who are likely to receive increased interest and attention from other programs as the year/season progresses.

As always, couple (excitement + buzz) + wins = a rising Tulane football program.
Remember, Toledo is entering his 3rd season.
[4-8 in 2007 and a very disappointing 2-10 in 2008. Prior to joining Tulane, Toledo had a 63-62 record all-time at Pacific and UCLA]

Green Wave freshmen football players learn importance of early arrival on campus - Times-Picayune
- "We don't recruit junior college players, so we are trying to build this thing with freshmen, " Coach Bob Toledo said. "Last year's freshman class was brought in for July second-summer-session classes, and that was the first time we've had all freshmen here (that early). We just think it's important.
- "I've talked to every coach in (Conference USA), and they all do it," he said. "Some have to go out and raise money for it. . . . Each and every one of the schools does it . . . I think we absolutely have to do it or we'd be big trouble. Everyone would be ahead of us for sure. It's definitely something you need to do."
- The early conditioning indoctrination reaps huge benefits for the program, Toledo said. "They are absolutely way ahead of the game," he said. "In the old days, we really didn't bring in freshmen for summer schools. Having all the schools across the country bring in freshmen early has changed things. Some of our guys have gained 10 to 15 pounds already. I think it's a great thing."

Tulane quarterback Joe Kemp eager to be 'the guy' for Green Wave - Times-Picayune
- "It felt like I did pretty good," said Kemp, a sophomore from North Richland Hills, Texas.
- Offensive coordinator Dan Dodd, who also is the quarterbacks coach, agreed. "I think he had a good first day," Dodd said.
- Kemp, who played in five games, was working his way toward starting when a late hit in the first half of the Houston game broke his left collarbone and ended his season.
- ...won a carefully monitored competition with Moore and Ryan Griffin for the starting job. Coach Bob Toledo announced the decision after spring practice.
- "We've got a lot of incoming freshmen who'll be making an impact," Moore said. "We're another year into Coach Toledo's system. That can do nothing but help."

***Preseason Tulane Football Photo Gallery and Media Day News***

Tulane football team opens preseason camp, with photo gallery - Times-Picayune
Tulane running back Andre Anderson ready to pick up where he left off, with photo gallery - Times-Picayune

Tulane Football Media Day transcript from Head Coach Bob Toledo - neworleans.com

Tulane determined to prove critics wrong - neworleans.com
- Nearly every published prediction has Tulane as a bottom-ten football team in the country in 2009. [For example, ESPN's 2009 Preseason Bottom 10]
- "I have read and heard about all of the bottom-feeder predictions. We were not good last year, especially in the second half of the season. We think we are a better football team and we are anxious to prove it and to prove the doubters wrong," said Toledo.
- Senior running back Andre Anderson watched those final games of the season in misery...He was on his way to a huge season, rushing for 864 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging five yards per carry.
- We had a ton of injuries last year. It was hard after we started so well. I doubt that any team had as many injuries as we had last year. We were better than our record. We know all about the worst team in the country stuff this year. We are better than that and we are going to go out and try to prove it," said Anderson.
- Senior wide receiver Jeremy Williams echoes the same sentiment...Williams is considered an NFL prospect and he is determined to make his final season at Tulane a successful one.
- There is genuine excitement about sophomore quarterback Joe Kemp. At 6'4, 215, he has ideal size. With 4.7 speed, he has the ability to make plays with his feet. He played in five games as a freshman and just when he was taking over the starting position, he suffered a season-ending injury against Houston.
- Defensively, the Green Wave will be solid up front, led by senior defensive linemen Logan Kelley, Adam Kwentua and Reggie Scott. "That's a very good group. They have experience and talent. I'm excited about having the opportunity to coach them," said new Defensive Coordinator Steve Stanard.
- Unfortunately, Scott is among three players who will not be available for the first two games of the season. Toledo has suspended him, along with starting safety Corey Sonnier and freshman defensive lineman Rich Bell for violating Tulane athletic department rules. For a team desperately in need of a good start to the season, that is a blow.

Tulane Green Wave football coach Bob Toledo gives a healthy assessment - Times-Picayune
5 Reasons Why Toledo Can't Stop Smiling:
1. - "I admit injuries will always be part of football, " he said. "But as long as I've been in the business, more than 36 years, I've never had 17 players go down with season-ending injuries like we had last year."
2. - "As a football team, we're bigger, stronger, faster and in far better shape than we were at this time last year. ... I realize injuries can come in all sorts of crazy ways, but it's not going to happen to us because of a lack of overall fitness."
3. - "On offense, we're going into our third season with a sense of continuity on what we're trying to accomplish, by the players and the coaches, " Toledo said. "That is a big plus."
4. - "We made what I felt was a necessary change at defensive coordinator, " Toledo said. "We brought in Steve Stanard, who played at Nebraska, who coach defense for 18 years, who was coordinator at Colorado State, New Mexico State, South Dakota and Nebraska Wesleyan. Bottom line: keep it aggressive and keep it simple."
5. - "You lose 10 games, you lose the last eight, and everyone's down on you, " Toledo said. "It's the name of the game. So is attitude. The people coming back know what it was like last season. One reason I'm smiling is the look of pride on a lot of young faces."

Approx. 2009 Recruiting Pace:

- 5th Commit: 7/31/08
- 10th Commit: 9/20/08
- 15th Commit: 12/7/08
- 20th Commit: 12/15/08

Division I quarterbacks and receivers are plentiful in Louisiana - Times-Picayune
- Tulane's and LSU's programs, meanwhile, are kicking off their respective preseason workouts with much of their recruiting work completed six months in advance of the Feb. 3 National Signing Day.
- [Tulane] has secured 15 commitments, a total considered to be unparalleled at the Uptown school and double the seven commitments secured by this time a year ago. Toledo and his coaching staff expect to sign as many as 22 players.
- "Offensively, we need to sign a quarterback. That's a priority," Lichtenberger said. "We'd like to sign two. We definitely want to get a quarterback from the state of Louisiana, if that can work out. I don't know if that will or not. Like every other year, we need offensive linemen. We'll always sign multiple prospects there.
- "Defensively, linebacker overwhelmingly is our No. 1 need. So that's where we're probably going to sign our biggest numbers, and that's where we need guys to make an impact next year."
- The current crown jewel of Tulane's 2010 class is south Florida quarterback Michael Strauss of Gulliver Prep in Miami. Strauss is the Wave's top-rated prospect, ranked No. 41 among pro-style passers by Rivals. His increasing popularity is evidenced by a recent scholarship offer from Alabama.
- "We are really pleased with how we've done," Lichtenberger said. "I can't give you a definitive why. I don't know if it's the overall culture of college recruiting that has changed with people committing early. We haven't changed what we're doing. We're still identifying players and going after the ones we want. This year they're committing early."

Apparently, you do, as you just bumped this thread.

Mack Brown and Greg Davis do, as well. Not only are both former coaches at Tulane, but the latter has a son on the coaching staff.
