The Austin campus of the University of Texas System is, I believe officially designated as the "main campus." Just like the Baton Rouge campus is the main campus of the LSU system. therfore they are entitled to go by the name "UNIVRSITY OF TEXAS" without any reference to the specific location of the campus. The Berkley campus is the main campus in the UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA system, so they get to go by "CAL" or "CALIFORNIA" even though there are other campuses in the system that are better known...UCLA for instance. ULL is not to my knowledge the "main campus" of the UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA system...maybe they are, but not to my knowledge, and therefore really should not be calling themselves "LOUISIANA."

With all that said...this is not a point I argue with those folks. No point in it.

I would hazzard to guess that the folks in Monroe do not like it at all that the folks in Lafayette do that, as both shcools can use the name if either can, since niether is the "main" campus of the system.
