Rafa is such a beautiful volleyer...The volley he hit in the ad court sideline in the first game after the delay was simply a thing of beauty. Even more impressive when you consider the impressivie defensive shot Zverev had hit up the line.

If I called him the best volleyer on tour, I wouldn't be the first.

Apparently Tennys decided to wake up and play some tennis this morning

After being bounced in 4 straight 1st round matches and losing the first set 6-1, he then went on to win his first round match in Geneva against the atp #412.

Yeah, I saw that he got a nice draw...or at least a favorable first round matchup. Hopefully that will be his version of a "slumpbuster".

I'm not sure about this, but if I'm putting some things together here, world #68 Taylor Fritz must have been hoping to make a little deeper run at RG, but when he got bounced in the first he must have started looking for somewhere to play. I guess he wasn't on the draw at the Challenger 100 in Surbiton, England, so they made him play through the qualifying to make the tournament! Just seems crazy to think of a #68 player showing up for the qualifying of a Challenger 100 event. (He won both qualifying matches to make the tournament)

I didn't want to pollute the RG thread with this. Not sure if it's just self-reinforcing tweets, but there is chatter that Roger is lining up a $30 million per year deal with Uniqlo for 10 years.

damn so uniqlo ditches novak and ups the ante with RF?

that would effectively kill the RF apparel brand with nike, no?

i would think he would still have a footwear deal with the swoosh.

Here.. we.. go..

Roger and Kyrgios playing in Stuttgart this week.

I wonder if Tennys is taking a little break after the french? Doesn't look like he is playing this week, he is schedule to play next week at Halle.

I noticed Tiafoe wasn't playing this week either*. I didn't check any further than that, but it could just be a deal where american guys don't wanna on the road for that extra week.

Nobody's asking for my opinion on this, but if they were I would have told them to play one of this weeks' 250 tournaments. Tennys didn't have a particularly fruitful run in Europe on the dirt, and shouldn't be turning down opportunities to pick up points.

Also, I'm not bullish on Tennys as a grass court player. He's a bit too defensive.

*he's on my fantasy team and I'm considering dropping him and picking up somebody else on the waiver wire. So, wanted to see his early grass results.

I saw that. I was surprised to say the least.

1. does Roger really wanna make that move? Yeah, that's a boatload of money, but one guy who doesn't really have to make decisions based on revenue considerations is Fed.
2. Can Nike not pay what Uniqlo will pay? Perhaps this is my US-centric parochialistic provincialism speaking here, but isn't Nike a bigger swinging dick in the athletic apparel game than uniqlo? I mean, I've literally never even seen a uniqlo shirt in person.

It would be a weird fit for Fed because he is a luxury brand guy, but Uniqlo is basically a Japanese version of Old Navy. It's a strange phenomenon creeping into sports where huge apparel companies not known for athletic goods are signing guys. I know Uniqlo had Adam Scott and Berdych was with H&M for a while.

I'm sure Nike has the cash, but if it results in them paying him more than somebody like LeBron, I don't know if I'd do it. Fed is a huge brand ambassador, but I wonder if Nike actually makes more money off of lower tier guys like KD or Kyrie who actually sell more shoes than RF gear. Gonna be interesting to see if this gets wrapped up by Wimbledon. I'd love to see Fed in a bunch of different brands' gear like a club player.

of course Nike can, if anything, but it seems as if they are content with hitching their wagon to the Nadal train going forward if a deal is not reached with RF.

to me, I would think Roger is the type of athlete that would garner a lifetime-type of contract with Nike, not unlike what Lebron signed not long ago. The RF logo is unmistakable and for me, it is tennis as much as the Nadal bull (his logo should be a butt pick, to be honest).

I own and wear a bunch of Uniqlo apparel, just nothing tennis related. The Djokovic kits were amazingly bland and ugly and the Nishikori kits were a weird fit, even for a 'like-nishikori' dude that I am.

They've got cash, but they are no swinging dick like Nike.

Federer to Uniqlo would change the game for them and would flip the tennis apparel world upside down, IMO.

I have some Uniqlo gear - the shorts are pretty comfortable, but the shirts are very chafey - if that's a word. And the quality of the Djoko (former)/Nishi stuff is not in line with Nike's good stuff.

Cut on the Uniqlo stuff is very different from the Nike Roger stuff as well. Maybe that will change. On another note, it (Uni) is much more affordable than the Roger/Rafa Nike lines.
