They say things like this a lot: "The Boise State model has worked for them--there's no reason it can't work for us." I imagine those same people are saying, "BYU is going independent, and it will probably be a success for them. We should do it too since we're just about as prestigious a program as BYU."

You know, crap like that. That's about as delusional as a ULL fan predicting ULL's budget to be at the BCS level in three years.

Tech: shitty football, filled with pride and dick envy
ULL: shitty football, filled with pride and dick envy
ULM: shitty football, outdraws Tech and ULL

"They've won a football title in their decade there"

What is forgotten is that, for ratings and exposure, the WAC sent Fresno State to the better bowl, played in the SF Bay Area. Though technically the WAC champ, the techsters were relegated to the Humanitarian Bowl, played on the blue turf of Boise.

I rail on Tech as much as anybody, and every bit of it is deserved, but Tech was straight-up WAC champs that year. 7-1 was the best WAC record; we shouldn't qualify it with a "technically."

Then why didn't the WAC put them in the bowl they deserved? Sure they won straight up, but their own conference dissed them.

None of my business. At any rate, the bowl you're in does not determine whether or not a team is a conference champ. Dissed or no, Tech won the WAC in 02.

Arkansas averaged 68,932. ULM averaged 20,934. So yes, you are right.

There was no diss. The WAC doesn't have a predetermined bowl game that the champion goes to. They see who is bowl eligible and place them in the bowl games that are best for the WAC. At that time, the WAC only had 2 bowl games, so Fresno got to play in their back yard and Tech went to Boise.

Why not the MAC, if Tech can fly to Hawaii they can fly to Michigan.

Some have offered this as a possibility. Better then the current WAC and Sunbelt. Similar travel costs though.

Revisionist history. The bowl in the bay area (Emerald Bowl or something similar) was the predetermined bowl for the champion that year. Really, would going to Boise be a greater reward than going to San Francisco? The WAC looked at numbers and who would be best for drawing a crowd and exposure for the conference.

If 22,000 showed up for the Boise State game, imagine how many more will show up to see Tech play the Chippewas!

Over/under on number of Tech fans who even know who that is: 5000.

Just join the fricking Sun Belt, Tech. It'll make everything a bit more fun for everyone, including you. Quit pretending you're happy playing USU and NMSU and just join the rest of us.

Nope. The WAC has improvised for over a decade. The fact that their footprint stretches from Ruston to Oahu makes this necessary. Since their footprint is so big, and since none of their bowls is significantly more lucrative than the others, they dole out their bowl bids in a manner different from those of the other conferences.

Not that year. Maybe later.

In fact, it was probably the unexpected winning of the conference championship by Latech in its first year of membership that caused the WAC to look holistically rather than paint themselves in the corner of having to give the champ the best bowl.
