The Road to the 2012 Kentucky Derby

The 2012 Kentucky Derby is 100 days away. Let's delve in.
This year's crop of 3 y/o thoroughbreds is starting to get into some key prep races across the country. So far this month we've kicked things off with the Sham Stakes, the Count Fleet, and the Lecompte Stakes at the Fairgrounds.
Here's a look at an early Top Contenders List - with Hansen, Union Rags and Creative Cause (1/2/3 in the '11 Breeders Cup Juvenile, respectively) atop the poll. A couple others I will be keeping an eye on going forward are:
Algorithms (a bay colt sired by 2006 Preakness winner Bernardini.
He will be racing Sunday afternoon, along with juvenile champ Hansen, in the G3 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
quote:
On the far outside is Starlight Racing's undefeated Algorithms, who gets a class test after winning his first two starts for trainer Todd Pletcher. The $170,000 Keeneland September yearling is a son of Bernardini out of the stakes-placed Cryptoclearance mare Ava Knowsthecode. He is a half-brother to graded stakes winners Justin Phillip and Successful Mission.
Algorithms, who will be ridden by Javier Castellano, broke his maiden in June by 5 1/4 lengths. He returned at Gulfstream Dec. 16 in an optional claiming race at 6 1/2 furlongs and prevailed with a late rally by one length. He is the only entrant in the Holy Bull to have won over the Gulfstream main track.
The other I'm interested in is So Brilliant, a gray whose sire Medaglia d'Oro produced 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra in his first crop of foals. He was impressive in late November when he was game down the stretch in the G3 Hollywood Prevue.
- Here's a nice little read in Forbes from a couple of weeks ago about gearing up for the Derby season.
- In this article the writer takes a look at female jockey Rosie Napravnik and her quest to become the first woman jockey to win the Kentucky Derby.
I'm looking forward to the upcoming races leading up to the first weekend in May!

I've been hearing Union Rags hype since the Breeders' Cup.

I like that UR isn't beginning his spring campaign until the Fountain of Youth in late February. A lot of star 2 year-olds get burnt out and fade from the ranks during their 3 y/o season, so giving him a bit of a breather could be a good move.
In other horse racing news, Black Caviar is racing tomorrow in Australia. Going for her 17th straight win. If she wins I could see her taking her undefeated record to Dubai.

Well that didn't last long. Hansen, the early odds-on favorite to win the Kentucky Derby, was bested in the slop Sunday by an upstart colt. Algorithms, a son of Bernardini and trained by Todd Pletcher, cruised by Hansen down the muddy stretch at Gulfstream Park to win by five lengths and end the short-lived reign of the 2-year-old champ.
replay: Holy Bull Stakes
After a slight stumble out of the gate Hansen gathered himself and bolted out to a quick lead in this mile-long affair. But after being stalked by Algorithms and a handful of also-rans, Hansen didn't have the motor to keep pace once the field turned from home. Algorithms was under a smooth hand ride when Javier Castellano cruised across the finish line, leaving fans and media members to wonder what exactly happened to the Eclipse Award winner. If this early upset is anything, perhaps it's a foreshadowing of the rest of the 3 year old season - an up and down affair where no one horse establishes himself as the dominant runner.

Thoughts from Pletcher after the race: per ESPN
quote:
"We knew we were going to find out where we stood with this horse running against the 2-year-old champ," said Pletcher, who trains Algorithms for Starlight Racing. "We had the benefit of a good post and a race over the track, and overall I was very, very pleased with his effort. We didn't know for sure how he'd handle the racetrack but his pedigree suggested he would. He was on his toes leaving the paddock but relaxed well for us. He's by Bernardini and so far he hasn't shown any distance limitations."
Pletcher, who has more than a handful of potential Kentucky Derby candidates in his barn at the moment, said he remains undecided where or when Algorithms would return.
"You can never have enough good 2-year-olds in this business," said Pletcher. "Now we have Discreet Dancer and Algorithms who are 2 for 2 over this track but you hate to run them against each other."

El Padrino looks like good Kentucky Derby prospect winning two-turn allowance (video included)
look at this guy
quote:
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Add another horse, El Padrino, to trainer Todd Pletcher’s steadily growing list of Kentucky Derby prospects.
El Padrino may have actually moved to the top of that list following his extremely impressive two-length victory over Take Charge Indy on a good and sealed racetrack Sunday at Gulfstream Park. The entry-level allowance race was the first start for El Padrino since his third- place finish in the Grade 2 Remsen two months earlier.
El Padrino, who was ridden to victory by Javier Castellano, completed 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.68. His final time was the fastest at the distance during the meet and more than two seconds faster than Revron’s final clocking winning the Gulfstream Park Derby on New Year’s Day.
quote:
El Padrino raced within easy striking of the early leaders while saving ground through the opening six furlongs, waited to launch his bid, as Pletcher predicted, on the final bend before wearing down Take Charge Indy in late stretch to win going away. Take Charge Indy, making his first start since finishing fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, drew out to a commanding lead entering the stretch but proved no match for the winner while finishing more than 13 lengths clear of the others in what amounted to a two-horse race.

I don't think either of them qualify for the Derby
Both are solid horses no doubt
