playoff would be administered by ncaa...meaning auto bids for all conferences
then you've got to have some wildcards so you're talking at least 14 teams..probably 16.
Wrong. That's a horrible playoff. Most halfway decent playoff ideas deal with using BCS rankings #1-4, 1-6. etc. to determine who gets in.

Nope, the BCS would do much better to add a playoff. Doesn't everyone want the best two teams to play for the title?

surely my friend...
north texas plays in orion belt conf...
chokelahoma plays in little 12
as potential conference champs you could see them in a first round playoff matchup....that's what i'm talking about...

Texas disagrees.
Whether you think there should be a playoff or not, there's no way you can argue the two most deserving teams didn't play in the NCG.

The Bowl system is 'technically irrelevant' in some sense, but with the playoff system, that's the only thing that anyone will watch.
Why? Those games were rendered irrelevant by the BCS itself, yet people continue to watch. I think people will watch good matchups regardless.
I don't think you'd see any dropoff for example in the viewership of LSU-GA Tech, whether there be playoffs or the BCS because the BCS is a playoff...albeit a two team one.

and you wanna tell me that arizona is TRULY one of the best two teams in the NFL???? they won the worst division and then got hot for three games...period.

Show me a playoff that is not administered by the NCAA.

1. North Texas plays in the Sun Belt
2. That playoff idea blows. Nobody would use that. They would take the BCS #1-4 teams in a four team playoff, #1-6 in a 6 team playoff, and #1-8 in an 8 team playoff. They could also use some form of the +1 system, or if they wanted to get fancy they could use a Qualifications Based Playoff.

Sure I can argue. OU got in over Texas because Cincinnati and TCU were better than Arkansas and Rice. And because OU lost before they did. Let me ask you something...if OU-Texas is played on Nov 29 instead of early October, who do you think finishes ahead in the BCS standings?

I think you could make a case for Texas and USC. How do they deserve it any less than Oklahoma or Florida?

So do you wanna answer all the critics who cite last season and the teams ranked 7, 8 & 9 not getting into a six team playoff.....Texas Tech, Penn St and Boise State why they shouldn't get a shot?....and don't forget cincinnati

Sure, you could use a Qualifications Based Playoff or a form of the +1 system which is designed to eliminate conflict. Anything would be better than the crapfest we have now.

you're kidding yourself if you think the ncaa doesn't get their grimy hands into a playoff system and ruins it just like they've tinkered with all the other sports in an effort to make them "fair". but you just keep you fantasy...it feels good.

I actually wouldn't mind a 6 team playoff at all, if you pushed the season up a week/got rid of a bye week or two, played the first two rounds immediately after the reg season ended at the home of the highest ranked team, (and voted on the Heisman after that time), waited a week after the end of the semis, then did the bowls as usual. So, for example, the season would look like:
Aug 20ish: season begins
Nov 30ish: Conf Champs
Dec 6th: 3-6 and 4-5 (at 3 and 4's home field)
Dec 13th: 1 vs lowest seed left (4, 5, or 6), 2 vs highest seed left (3, 4, or 5) at 1 and 2's home field
Dec 20th: Heisman
Dec 23rd: Bowls begin, as normal
Jan 8th: NCG at neutral site

and if the bcs started a playoff of some sort, it'd be a minimum of 10 teams because they'll never shrink the current system.

Still believe in a perfect world, this is the best solution. Unfortunately, even if the presidents agreed to it, it would never happen because of TV wanting a definite schedule.

Had weaker schedules and didn't perform as well in wins (yes, "style points").

and don't get me wrong...I'm not against a playoff. I just want people to consider the downside of a playoff and try to work them out rather than just spouting off with "take the top 6 ranked bcs teams and put em on da field"....that is a gross over-simplification of the issue.
someone did come up with something interesting. taking the crappy div 1 teams and sending them to 1AA reducing div 1 to around 50 teams. realocate the conferences similar to the nfl and institute a playoff system...not perfect but hey if it works for the nfl....and you could shrink the regular season easier to start the playoffs a tad earlier than the bowls.

Interesting point. You'd prob be correct. At the same time, though, it's possible that the voters would reevaluate the entire situation (like they have every year). And also, if UT would go through in this scenario, for the people wanting a playoff, indirectly, this almost acts as a playoff (since a playoff only takes into account what you do at the end).
