Pick up his 12M option for next year, and then get him to sign a contract for beyond. No reason to spend 6M unnecessary dollars.

Yeah we can exercise the 12 million option but I think it makes more sense to pay him more now.

I would much rather be paying him $17-18 million now and $8 or so million in 2018 than $12 million now and $17-18 million in 2018 (If that all makes sense).

ETA you dont want to get stuck paying your best players a ton of money when they are older. Id rather pay him a ton now while hes in his prime and then significantly lower it during his later years.

We are getting screwed right now for this very reason with Chippers contract

Yeah and I could care less about what terrible restaurant he is eating at.

Give me Braves updates and leave the food and music to others

He is only going to be 30 going into his new contract. Give him a 5 year deal and he will be 35 when it ends, not 40 like Chipper. He will still be worth his contract.

And yes, I know he is a catcher.

He needs to drop 15 pounds if he wants to remain effective into his mid/late 30s.

If we can get a contract negotiated for McCann that ends when he turns 35 that would work but I dont see that happening. He will most likely want a career ending contract and if we get stuck paying a 35+ year old catcher 17mill then we are screwed come 2018

Meh

He will be fine. And I don't expect him to be fully effective as he will go into his last contract. But this next one coming up, you can pay him and not worry about his production.

Don't see us giving him a 7 or 8 year contract.

I hope you are right, but using your logic I would still rather pay him 17 now and have it end when he turns 34. You are really putting some question marks with a 35year old catcher that isnt exactly in great shape.

ETA I think NYY got stuck paying Jorge something like 13 mill last year. I'm sure they regretted that

Well then front load it. 5 years/90M

20, 20, 20, 17, 13 or something like that. Either way, it's really no big difference. I have no concerns over him continuing his ability for another 6 years.

Their fault for giving a catcher that was 36 a new contract at 13 per.

I would only feel comfortable with it if they did something like that. He isn't exactly in great, or even good, shape, and assuming Freeman becomes our everyday first baseman for the next 10-15 years, there is no where else for Mac to play if his knees get bad.

When Jonny Venters' left elbow was a little sore after Sunday's appearance against the Orioles, the Braves opted not to pitch him in any of this week's games. The rest has already seemed beneficial for the Braves left-handed reliever, who was encouraged after completing a pain-free long-toss session on Friday.

"They just wanted to give me a couple of days to let it rest and get it feeling good again, so that I can go into the year feeling strong and good," Venters said. "It feels great now. I'm actually excited about it."

Chipper needs to retire now, not end of season, & help the Braves free up some money to trade with the Mets for David Wright. Mets needs money. Braves need a 3rd baseman. Goodbye Chipper. Thanks for all the great years.

I have a feeling that Chipper is going to retire in June or July rather than September.

Looks like Flande has a pretty good shot of making the club.

Kimbrel
Venters
O'Flaherty
Martinez
Medlen
Flande
Gearrin

This looks to be it. Am I forgetting anybody?
