And yeah I'm pretty sure Super Two's are still around. In fact, I think they increased the number of players who can be eligible. I know they talked about it, but don't know if it was eventually included or not.

Speaking of new rules, I wonder if we try to get draft pick compensation with Michael Bourn after the year. We would have to offer him a salary that is the average of the top 125 paid players in baseball, which comes out to around $12.5M or so.

Depending on his market, that might be risky, but I think it would turn it down.

With Medlen and Viz, I don't see a way even Fredi can screw it up this year.

I remain unconvinced.

I'm still trying to figure out how you think this team isn't going to succeed, when it is an improved product over what we have had the last two years when we were there till the end.

Well, I'd probably feel pretty good about this year's team in last year's division.

Now, you have the Nats, who have actually built a decent little team. They have a great 1-2 in their rotation, and then a solid 3-4 in Zimm and EJax. They've got a solid lineup too.

And the Fish will be markedly improved. Their rotation is better than it gets credit for, and their young superstar is actually living up to his potential. Not to mention adding Reyes.

It has more to do with the raised level of competition than anything else. If this team was an 89 game winner going up against an average Nats and terrible Fish and Mets, why should we expect the same when 2 of those 3 are significantly improved and we're not?

Our competition has improved for the most part (except the Phils). So I see where you are coming from. I guess I am an optimist though because I see the Braves winning the division this year. Bourn for a full year. Heyward has to bounce back some. Freeman will be at least as good as last yr and early reports say that he will be better. Uggla should be more consistent. No LOWE! Better bullpen front to back.

I really like our lineup this year. I hope the Frediot doesn't frick it up somehow.

Well the Nats owned us even when we were winning the division year after year. Anything is possible now that they have their best team since the strike. I'm not worried about the fish.

I think Heyward is the most important thing going into the season. If he comes out sluggin I think the rest of our team will feed off it.

I'm still not convinced of either team to be honest. Yes, improved, but each team has more areas of concern than the Braves. Nats lineup stayed the exact same and they scored the lowest amount of runs in the division last year. Their rotation will take them up to 86 or 87 wins though and should fight for a wildcard spot if there are two of them this year.

And the Fish added Jose Reyes, good for them. But you won't find me putting any confidence in a team with the rotation they have, and who knows how long Josh Johnson will hang around. They definitely won't finish last like they did last year, but I think you'll see them finish around .500 or so.

My biggest concern when we're talking division opponents is the addition of two lefty starters in Gio and Buehrle, because we all know how badly we suck against the worst lefties, yet alone a couple pretty good ones.

What's wrong with it?

Johnson is an ace, and a Cy Young candidate if healthy. He's better than any pitcher on our team.

Buehrle is solid, dependable, competitive. Eats innings.

Anibal Sanchez is pretty legit. He's like their Beachy... Nolasco is a question mark.

Finally, you have Big Z. But he's playing for a guy he really connects with, for one, and also, he's still young. Plenty of time for him to turn it around.

It's not a top 5 rotation, but it's certainly not bad.

Frank Wren and John Coppolella (Director of Professional Scouting) spoke at Georgia Tech the other day apparently. The story is on Capitol Avenue Club. LINK

They have a link to a guys twitter that was in the class. He posted a bunch of their quotes.

That would have been awesome to sit in on.

We all know that isn't happening.

A 3 year younger version of Derek Lowe

Yeah I like Sanchez, agree on Nolasco.

God I can't wait to face him a few times a year

You have a Miami lineup that is going to score about the same amount of runs the Braves will, and a pitching staff that isn't nearly as good, especially once Josh goes down in June. Color me unconvinced that this team has a chance to surpass the Braves.

Guess we'll see... I'll stick with my prediction of Phils, Fish, then Braves or Nats in 3rd.

Bookmarked

Just for fun and for me to look back on this, if Heyward has an OPS above .830 we win the division. If not we finish 2nd, with the Nats 3rd, Fish 4th.

Some of the quotes of Frank Wren from twitter from the GA Tech visit..

quote:

The Braves' favorite statistic for determining player value is OPS

quote:

"Besides hitting a fastball, scouting is one of the most difficult things to do in baseball"

quote:

Wren says Liberty Media doesn't look to the Braves for profit. Just not to lose. What the Braves make go into the team.

quote:

Wren says scouting hitting is much harder than scouting pitching.

quote:

Most people in baseball thought Moneyball could be entertaining, but the movie was a joke. (Wren)

quote:

Beware of hitters with high home run totals early in minors. Downside of XBH.

quote:

Next stat: GB/FB ratio. "If you go into Philly with three flyball pitchers, you will come back with 3 L's." (Wren)

quote:

Next stat: BB/SO and BB/AB. Gives you a good look at plate discipline. (Wren/Copp)

quote:

The Braves have confidence in Tyler Pastornicky at shortstop, a lot because of his stats (BB/SO and BB/AB)

quote:

WAR is the next stat. "We use @fangraphs WAR because we use the site so often." -Coppolella

quote:

Braves have a stat that's scaled to OPS called DOM. It's for pitchers. It's SO/(walks+hits).

quote:

Wren: "We have tracked Cespedes for 6-7 years, we just didn't value him as much as other clubs."

quote:

Wren: "Keith Law doesn't like our drafts. We think Minor and Gilmartin have good stuff."

Haven't heard of when they are releasing it. They released it on Feb 23 the last two years, and Feb 24 the year before that so I assume it will be out next week.
