We aren't going to carry three catchers. Laird will probably be gone.

Highly doubtful. Because then you can't pinch hit Gattis.

Laird is not going anywhere, at least not yet. He is signed for two years and will likely serve as Gattis' backup next season.

This. I just don't see Fredi NOT having a veteran backup for McCann. Obviously Gattis is on fire and he's #1 right now, but even when McCann comes back I just don't see him sending Laird away. Not a big enough sample size on Gattis to anoint him the next big thing yet. Hopefully he is.

Also, I'm pretty sure I heard on the radio the other day that if/when McCann leaves at the end of the season we get a 1st round pick for him? Can anyone confirm this?

Only if we tender him an offer, he declines and someone else signs him. And it's a sandwich pick between Rounds 1 and 2.

Like Michael Bourn this year.

I doubt Braves tender an offer to him. With his injury history and age, it would be too risky because he might accept it.

Yea, we would have to tender him an offer. I don't see that either. Unless his agent is boras. I don't know who his agent is off hand

I doubt he'd take it.

It'd be a one-year offer at a rate he can likely do better than from an AL team. He's looking to get one last contract before he retires. Waiting another year to get one more contract isn't going to help his cause IMO.

Must have missed that part. Or they didn't mention it.

Yes, pick 31:

LINK

It's why it took so long for Bourn, Lohse and others to get deals. The team signing the guys has to forfeit their top pick (no one gets it, it just gets eliminated from the draft).

ETA: We forfeited our 1st rounder to sign BJ Upton.

Unfortunately, all of this talk about Gattis staying up at the MLB level is just talk. Best guess is that we send Gattis down to the minors because he still has options. This would allow him to continue playing catcher every day down in AAA, and he's right down the road in case of a call up.

McCann will be the starter simply because of who he is. Laird has too large of a contract to just simply cut our losses with him. It's unfortunate, but it's the most likely scenario.

--------

What I would LOVE to do, is trade McCann at the all-star break to an AL team in contention. They could utilize him as a catcher or DH which would increase his value. A team in contention would also fork out a bit more in prospects because of their "win now" mode. Only problem is in order to get a decent return, McCann would have to be raking. If he is raking, I don't know that the FO would be interested in trading him at the deadline.

It's a win/win and a lose/lose situation for the front office. Win/win because we have a surplus in position player talent, but a lose/lose because if McCann is raking he just walks in free agency and we don't get anything in return for him.

I think the most likely situation is McCann comes back and is splitting starts with Gattis for a couple weeks, to get a feel of how McCann is hitting and if he is truly ready to be playing again, as well as if Gattis continues with his amazing play.

At this point I think it'll all depend on what Gattis has been doing.

Gattis still beasting? McCann also playing well?
Keep the split starts

Gattis still beasting? McCann not so much.
More Gattis Less McCann

I don't see a situation where McCann doesn't play, we are going to bench a team leader completely, and I don't think anyone else feels that they would do that.

This is pure speculation but is it possible that Maholm is pitching with more focus and purpose since he's pitching on an actual winning team for the first time in his career?

That and he's playing close to home again. Maybe Glavine is tutoring him too, lol.

I can't really see them sending him down. There's no real advantage to sending him down.

Now, if his bat cools, sure. But hitting like he is, it would almost be foolish.

There are 6 teams with 4 losses and the A's lost their last 2 but they go from 9 to 2, lol

I was always on the Maholm bandwagon. I had seen the braves face him and get shut down too many times.

He should steal more bases so he can get in the exclusive 95/30 club.
