Yeah if Grienke signs, I think Mac is gone.

He is probably gone regardless.

At least y'all have the best backup catcher in baseball.

If there has to be a decision made between keeping Mac or Bourn.. man that's tough. Bourn is one of, if not the, best lead-off hitter in the game and he's a great defender in CF. On the other had Mac seems to be the leader of that team and calls good games + has a really good bat at the position. Problem I see with the Braves is WHO will be their CF is Bourn leaves? Sign BJ Upton? Victorino is going to be expensive as shite. Nobody in the minors to call up..

After that, a contract that large is a scary thing to think about when you are starting to have to lockdown Heyward and Freeman and Beachy.

If our FO was better at handling the realities of a limited budget, they would be negotiating with Heyward and Freeman on long term extensions right now.

Maybe...

If Freeman is Adam LaRoche 2.0, how much money do you want to tie up in him? I think he's a good player, and if you can get him relatively inexpensively, then sure.

Heyward has an all-world, 5-tool skillset though. He's worth the "risk" of extending, IMO.

Well, we have Mac for another year so it won't really be between them, unless we want to sign Bourn and find a trading partner for Mac.

CF is definitely going to be a problem if Bourn walks, which he will if Grienke is traded for and signed IMO.

I'm sure the Braves plan is to have Constanza be the everyday CF though

Also, I'm wondering if Bourn's perceived value is higher than what he will actually command. It's hard to see anyone shelling out even 10 mil per for a guy with a career OPS+ at 91.

Channeling his inner JD Drew in this contract year no doubt.

I'm trying to think of a player comparison here... but can you think of a speedster/defender without power that gets paid huge money? I can't really.

Don't know if you're kidding but I'd say Kenny Lofton fits the bill here. He was highest paid player on the Indians when he left Atlanta when he went back in 1998 at the age of 31.

Ah. Didn't know about the $12mil team option. That's a little high. Could definitely see him getting traded.

Just to have an idea for the future...

2013:

FA - Bourn
Arb 1 - Heyward, Hanson ($3-4M)

2014:

FA - Mac, Prado
Arb 1 - Freeman, Beachy, Kimbrel
Arb 2 - Heyward, Hanson

2015:

No FA
Arb 1 - Delgado, Minor
Arb 2 - Freeman, Beachy, Kimbrel
Arb 3 - Heyward, Hanson

2016:

FA - Uggla, Heyward, Hanson

Just a rough outline over our main guys for the next four years.

Well, I meant currently, not in the past.

But if you want to use that comparison...

Lofton had 3 AS appearances, 4 GGs, was runner-up in the RoTY and 4th in MVP voting before he signed with Atlanta. He also had 5 consecutive seasons with an OPS+ over 100. He lead the majors in steals 5 straight seasons and triples once. Atlanta paid him about 5 million dollars. He peaked at 8 million in 2001.

By comparison, Bourn has 1 AS game and 2 GG. He's lead the majors in steals 3 times. Never finished in MVP voting, and didn't for RoTY. He's never lead the league in triples. His only season with an OPS+ over 100 was last year... 102.

Lofton had a shite ton more accomplishments to point at and he STILL didn't get major money. Obviously the climates have changes some salary wise and players make more now, but I just don't think any team is going to shell out 15 mil per for him. He's not the type of player that gets paid huge.

There's a reason he's trying to hit more homers. Because that's where the money goes...

ETA: I doubt Lofton was the highest paid player when we acquired him. He was only making like 3.5 in Cleveland.

Despite my hatred for the Liberty Media payroll, that's actually a pretty manageable 4 years of contracts if you break it down.

My major concern with Freeman is his apparent fear of drawing walks. Patience is something that most guys tend to develop as they get older though. I would be willing to take the risk, but I doubt either of them gets signed to a long term deal.
