They also lost a 3 year starter at QB who is now in the NFL, a few OL, and 16 defensive letterman.
Four starters are back on the OL. Along with four of the top six WRs and three of the top four RBs. Losing Davis was big, but the offense is ranked about 115 in the nation. The defense lost a good bit, but they have enough talent to be better than they are. I think the problem is about 90% coaching. It looks like the players have quit already. Of course, the coaches pretty much quit during the first game.

Nobody had a problem with it last year when they were going 12-2
But that's the thing. You had a guy who was content and happy there and constantly had Southern Miss competetive and in bowl games. You get rid of him and sure, you could hire a guy who could have a couple good years, but then he'll be off down the road to a bigger job and you have to start all over again. You have to hit a homerun with every hire or you'll be garbage, and even if you do make a great hire, you'll be doing it again a few years later after he goes to a bigger school.

They dumped Bower & his sustainability to be a program that wanted to become a coach farm system for BCS schools. Then they tried to go back to a guy they felt may stay for a while & have success. They basically hoped they hired another Bower. Should have never fired the guy. Anyone that says otherwise is ignorant

Yep, should have been happy with 5 or 6 losses a year. Don't ever try to do better. What do you think they should have done when Bower retired (which probably would have happened by now anyway), just shut the program down?

Ellis Johnson will be Southern Miss's Chris Scelfo. Watch.

Firing Bower was a good idea. Hiring Ellis Johnson was not.

You have to know your place.
Of course you want the best, but if you have to hire a new coach every 3 years because A)you have a fedora on your hands or B)you have an Ellis Johnson on your hands then you will be bad a lot more than you will be good.
Sometimes it's better to find that middle ground that Bower had.

ULM will beat Tulane by more than 3 touchdowns.
