Anyways long story short a friend was able to get me into this private class. $50 a month for 5 lessons a week (2 - 2 1/2 hours each).
OMG WHAT A DEAL!

I've got a year and a half left in this town so my goal is purple.
If you are a white belt now, Ima tell you, that nearly impossible

...and our coach is a adriano brown belt.
I have one brown belt instructor, Darren DeSalvo, under Carlos Machado. Black Belt Tim Credeur, and a black belt in Judo.
I also have a teammate that specializes in 10th planet and pretty much teaches me everything he knows...so Its going pretty good

if I work hard I can get my white in 6-8 months, hopefully (that's pushing it). Yes it'll be extremely tough but I hope to have at least a few stripes on my blue.

BJ Penn didn't listen to the haters, Ocean. I think you can do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted on 11/19/08 at 12:37 pm to TheOcean
That would be awesome if you do but it's extremly hard.
No one from our gym has yet to get a purple and they been in 3 years.
BJ Penn got his black in 4 years but his father moved him to Cali where he trained every day with a world champion. No school no work.
I would say it would take an avg person 4-6 years for purple
What are you ranked now?

agreed. blue to purple is a big jump. I know someone who won NAGA in Dallas and routinely beats purples, but they are still a blue. Everyone I know that has a purple belt, it has taken them 4-5 years of consistent training to achieve.

it also has more to do with what type of instructor you have. some may just want to sandbag some of their guys holding them back to win tournaments.
ive heard jean jacques machado say on video that getting to black belt should not take very long.
it all depends on the instructor their philosophy, etc, etc.

i thought he said 4-5 years.
i could be wrong though.
i mean if an instructors focus is more on self defense tactics and not mma grappling tournaments then i would agree with handing belts out sooner than some places. and it also depends if you put more emphasis on the basics and applying them as much as possible instead of learning some fancy stuff. i also remember on the ultimate fighter that when frank mir fought tim sylvia he would get his black belt if he were to sub tim in that fight

average time for a decent athlete with good instruction and regular participation is about 7 years..
people have been faster, and obviously much slower.
Breaks in training hold alot of guys back.
Crazy Tim got his in just under 7 and I think the military and him moving around from cali to Texas and Louisiana held him back a bit

also, belt ranking is not the best way many times to rate a grapplers skill and ability.
I never advanced passed a blue belt, but have submitted many browns and purples and even one gracie barra black belt in no gi.
Rich clementi is officially a purple belt, but has also subbed many black belts.
Then you have guys like my buddy Andrew Chappelle who is better than most black belts, and has never worn a gi. He actually fought Adriano and won the fight on the ground. swept him, passed his gaurd, held dominant position the whole fight before TKOing him in the third.
Thats not a knock on Adriano, because Adriano is a bb, with legit bb skills and is also better than most black belts. It is just a fact that Andrew is that damn good. Everytime I train with the guy he takes me to school on the mat. Which is why I always make sure we scedule a boxing sparring match anytime we grapple:)

Last week when Joe Daddy was promoted to black, I believe he said it was 13 years in the making.
Was Tim a black belt in judo before beginning jj?

I think he trained BJJ first, and some judo, then in the military focused on judo because that was what was available.
I forgot to add this: I think the main thing about belt ranking is knowledge, and not necessarily grappling skill.
That is to say that even though someone like Rich may be a level of a black belt grappler, or certainly a brown, Tim cant award him that belt because he doesnt know alot of the Gi techniques.
You cant have a black belt in BJJ not know the intricacies of a PURPLE belt level GI sweep. Obviously Rich would know how to pull it off, and how he does it. But he cant teach a blue belt the grip positions of that sweep because he never did gi and never learned it.
Thats what Tim told me. He told me like 3 years ago, "You wont get your purple until you actually consistently do gi classes and compete in BJJ tournies."
I can put on a blue belt and hang with just about any purple and a lot of Browns even with a gi on. But then I might get caught in a white belt level gi choke, because Ive never had to defend choke where the guy can use my jacket against me.

Is Rich a purple under Tim?
I've always been told that a purple and black will have basically the same level of knowledge, but the black will be able to more consistently and smoothly pull of moves and/or easily transition to others. I train with a purple under Tim, and he says Tim will catch you with basic gi chokes and armbars..but he does it so quickly and soundly that you can't escape.

is that blood all over the ring in the 3rd clip of the fight? Geez..

Yes that is blood all over the ring... At the end of the second round, when they stop the action, you can see blood roll down both sides of my neck all the way down my back.
And yes Rich is a purple under Tim. But that is what Im saying. It was an honorary promotion. Rich has never in his life put on a gi and rolled with tim in a gi class.
Rich is way better than any purple you have rolled with trust me

Yea I got my blue belt 8 years ago, and never really advanced past that. I submitted purple and brown belts, but mainly cause I was bigger and stronger and a better athlete.
I do see a big difference between blue and purple belts, not so much between purple and brown though.

why don't more people start handing out more belts in MMA related bjj like dave camarillo and his guerrilla jiu jitsu?
Posted on 11/19/08 at 7:10 pm to Maximus
some people just scoff at the whole traditional belt ranking system for MMA
but, Clementi actually does:)
Myself, Crazy Tim, JC Pennington, and Kenny Stevens all hold brown belts in MMA under Rich.
