I don't buy this assertion that they couldn't afford to pay him. They gave Jordy Nelson and Tahir Whitehead a combined $13 mil per year, money that could've been used on a front loaded deal for Mack.
As for his age, he's 27 and top tier edge players tend to have pretty good longevity. Most guys at Mack's level produced well into their 30s.
Even if we assume worst case on both points, they got awful return for him. What's likely to be a mid first rounder and a jump from early second to mid first just isn't enough for one of the best players in the league.
