This is an arguement that came about from the Southern Miss vs Ole Miss baseball game thread last night.

State and Ole Miss haven't played against Southern Miss since the early 90's. Many State and Ole Miss fans feel they have nothing to gain and everything to lose by playing Southern Miss. Others don't think they should have to play Southern Miss in Hattiesburg.

What do you guys think? Should State and Ole Miss have to play Southern Miss every year? There have even been state legislature members who have proposed bills to support this.

FWIW State and Southern Miss are scheduled to play a home and home in 2014 and 2015. Dan Mullen has stated that he is willing to play and beat every team in the State of Mississippi, so far he is 4-0 (Ole Miss twice, Jackson State, and Alcorn State)

Absolutely not, there is nothing for us to gain.

I can see why Nutt doesn't want to play them. He can't even beat J'Ville State.

Yes, both Miss. State and Ole Miss should play Southern Miss every single season.

Ole Miss has plenty to gain. A loss to Southern Mississippi is a lot better than a loss to Jacksonville State.

Mississippi State has plenty to gain. A loss to Southern Mississippi is a lot better than a loss to Maine.

Also, the "we have nothing to gain and a lot to lose" argument indicates a few things:
- You don't have much to begin with.
- You're far from certain that you'd win (ie, you're scared).
- The difference between the value of your program and the value of USM's program is a lot smaller than you think it is.

I disagree with you on this. I think that we should play EVERY year. When USM comes to Starkville it will be a sell out as compared to us playing UAB or Memphis. I think its good for the entire state of Mississippi.

I have a feeling this debate has been going on a lot longer than Nutt has been at Ole Miss.

This is probably true for State, but Ole Miss would sell out just as easily playing Memphis as they would playing USM.

Would Ole Miss sell out for UAB, or Northern Arizona, or Southeastern Louisiana, heck yall had at least 10K empty seats in the first half of the VANDY game.

What does any gain by playing a relatively tough OOC game?

Just do it for the rivalry, and if you manage to win one your fans could chant S E C like it was the BCSCG your team will never make it to

And to answer the question:

Absolutely. And it should be home and home.

Of course, you guys are afraid to play them for a number of reasons.

State isn't afraid to play them and have them on our future schedule.

LSU dropped them off of their schedule this year. My good friend is a diehard Southern Miss fan and alumni and he was PISSED. He was hoping to make a trip to Baton Rouge this year in his Black and Gold.

Not necessarily, depending on how much money USM would be willing to fork over for such a thing. USM happily went to Alabama just about every year for a few decades until Bama got shut out at home and canceled the series a few years later. I'd have no problem with either Ole Miss or State offering the same deal to USM.

If USM wants a home/away series with one of these schools, they'll have to pay for it, either by cutting the other school a check or giving them more than the usual road team's share of tickets (kind of like the LSU/Tulane series a few years ago). In either situation, their opponent will be the one providing a much larger fan base and tv viewer base (if the game is televised).

Being that Ole Miss or State brings more to the table than does USM, Ole Miss or State should expect to be rewarded for that, be it with money, extra seats at USM, or more home games in the series.

Yeah they should play them. Bama should schedule UAB also.

Atleast LSU schedules the small programs in LA.
