Could you imagine the uproar if AC Milan, Juventus or Roma released Clint Dempsey or Landon Donovan because they couldn't speak Italian? The same people who think the U.S. should be English-only would be outraged and call for some form of boycott or protest.
I don't think their would be a uproar at all.I know I certainly wouldn't complain and I am as big of a red white & blue flag waving American as they come. I know if I were a soccer player playing in Italy I would do my best to learn Italian so I could communicate directly with my teammates, coaches trainers and even the guy that sells my fruit at the corner market. Its called respect for your host country.
P.S. I spent time in Italy with the U.S. Army. I learned as much as I could. Although a lot of the Italians I interacted with spoke some English. I got a huge smile and a handshake when I would answer in my broken Italian. Was it good, no it was terrible, but they appreciated that I tried.

two posts after yours sums it up perfectly. Many can speak english and some quite well but choose not to because being interviewed in any capacity in your second language is scary as shite.
With media being the way it is, the tiniest slip up becomes news and an unwelcome distractions so guys opt to just not do it.
And whoever said something about immigrants is wrong too- most players go back to their home countries in the offseason. They're not immigrants, they just work here and return to where they're from.
So many entitled fricks think everything should bend to them. Let them entertain you by playing the game- whether they give you a fun soundbite in the language of your choosing is not their job.

99.9% of them do in a work capacity and a getting around in life. There is a HUGE gap between that and speaking comfortably to millions of people in a generation where the tiniest slip ups are exposed instantly.

This is the downfall of baseball. No kid is going to grow up idiolizing players like this.

you think American born players in Japan are expected to understand japanese?
every single one I know (and it's a lot) learns some baseball phrases, a few expressions and doesn't attempt to speak it on record.

In today's day and age where every single interview is a chance to lose your livelihood, I have zero issues with players speaking their native tongue with a translator.

You should speak through a translator at your interviews so you can avoid the questions about all the dingers you like to serve up.
