The show, which aired on cable's TBS instead of over-the-air CBS for the first time ever Sunday, generated its lowest overnight rating in history -- a 1.6 -- down 52 percent from 2017's 3.3

Sports Illustrated

As predicted. The new format for unveiling teams was a huge fail and the move from CBS didn't help either. I look for it to go back to normal next year

Going from CBS to TBS explains 99% of this drop.

No. The reason for the majority of the drop was the way in which the teams were unveiled. It got the most negative feedback. It was a horrible idea

It was a kluster just finding the damn thing, and then the format was just awful. Too anti-climatic. There’s something to be said for anxiously waiting for your team to be revealed in the bracket. They sucked the fun out of it by listing them in alphabetical order at the start. Plus the audio was screwed up with about a 3 second delay. Annoying as hell.

I realize the format sucked, but going to cable will always hurt tremendously.

In major cities people get over the air tv on all major networks free. The poor and young singles don't need cable.
Cbs vs tbs explains it.

Not sure about that. As someone who was interested in it but not awaiting it, I turned on the TV to CBS at 5:00 and the news was on. I had no idea it had moved to TBS. I turned to ESPN next and they were talking about the teams and matchups so I just stayed there. I feel like the move to TBS was the main problem, although I thought the way they unveiled teams was stupid as well.

I just don't watch these type of live shows anymore unless I have absolutely nothing else to do.

It's less of a time suck if I just wait until the brackets are out at 6 and look at it then.

I have antenna and Sling, so I could have watched it either way. I just chose not to.

So the reason the ratings dropped was because people who watched it didn't like the format?

Yeah, unless your team is on the bubble, it's not worth the time.

The format killed the suspense.

Imagine if a detective show like Columbo showed the murder at the opening. No one would watch.

Exactly

The move to TBS explained the ratings drop. Now, if the ratings suck next year, you can probably blame it on the new format
